Hi,

Just back from the 7/23 sailing of the Ruby. Had a great time. If you have any questions I will try to answer them.

Cheryl

New to this size ship, so have a few questions -

Long lines and seating problems at HC for breakfast and lunch?

Lines getting off ship at tender ports?

Mattresses?

Best spot for sailaways at ports?

Appreciate any input you can give

We have sailed a total of 35 days on her so maybe I can be of some help. Did both a Caribbean and a Trans-Atlantic. On neither of them did we ever have a problem finding room at the HC. About the only time was the day of sailing when it seems no one has eaten in 10 years and they all queue up in there to chow down. There will always be lines at the tender ports regardless of ship size. Or at least that has been our experience. They use the ship's lifeboats which hold a lot of folks so the wait is usually not too long. Of course that can differ for various reasons. We found the mattresses to be fine, If they are hard just have your room steward put an egg crate on. It is my understanding that Princess was changing out all their mattresses but I can't verify that. I do know they added flat panel TV's as we got a new one while in the middle of the Atlantic! As far as the best spot for sail aways, well there are many but if you don't have a balcony I would suggest up as high as you can get. Most anywhere is good. I hope you will enjoy the Ruby (I'm sure you will). She is our favorite Princess ride.

Enjoy your trip.

Cheers, Kenn

Hi Cheryl,

Sad your cruise is over so now is good time to plan for your next one:-) Here is my question? We will be on the Ruby next month for a 21 day cruise and know that Princess is upgrading to pillow top mattress' on their ships. Is that the case for the Ruby? We have a balcony cabin on the aloha deck. Always used a egg crate in the past as we find the beds a bit too firm.

Thanks

For sailaway (especially in Venice) go to deck 15 (Lido) and walk as far as you can go to the front of the ship. There is an unmarked door, which will be unlocked and leads to an area right on top of the bridge. You can also get to the front of the boat on deck 16.

Never had a problem with lines at HC.

Only tender ports we had were Corfu and Santorini. No problem in Corfu. At the recommendation of some CCers we took a ship excursion in Santorini as a result we did not have any line for tenders or for the cable car up to Fira. We did have to deal with about an hour wait for the cable car coming back to the ship.

Cost is determined by number of minutes purchased..10 percent discount if purchased on first day.

Internet service is VERY slow..practice writing and reading emails offline and going online to send!

Hi,

I never ate in the HC for either breakfast or lunch so I can't attest to the lines.

The only port that we tendered in was Santorini and it was very organized and not a long wait. In the morning we went to the dining room, were given tender tickets and our number was called within 15 minutes. On the way back, the line seemed somewhat long but was made more pleasant by cold water and chilled towels offered by Princess attendents. It actually moved fairly quickly as they would fill up a boat and another one would immediately pull up. I think the wait time was again 15 minutes.

The matresses seemed very comfortable to me. Not too hard or too soft, but I did not peek underneath to see if it was a pillowtop. I did not need to ask for an egg-crate.

Hope this helps

Cheryl

Hi again,

I believe I purchased 200 minutes on the internet for around $100 plus a $3.95 activation fee. Since I did this on the first day, 20 minutes were added for a total of 220 minutes. I used an i-pad that I brought along. The service did not seem slow to me. However, there were times at sea where I just couldn't connect, so I would try again another time and get on. It was not really a problem.

Hi Cheryl,

Pricing may be found on the Princess web site at http://www.princess.com/learn/onboard/gifts_services/communications/index.jsp

Pricing is the same on the ship as purchasing before the cruise except:

a) Bonus package minutes on board are only for packages purchased the first day or two and are 1/2 the number of bonus minutes than if purchased in advance.

b) No bonus minutes at all if purchased on board after the first day or two.

Pricing is the same for using your own WIFI device or the ship's computers. WIFI reception can range from excellent to poor depending where on the ship you are trying to use it. Sometimes you need to have your cabin door to the hallway open a little bit to get a decent signal in the cabin.

Speed depends on how many people are trying to use it at the same time, so at times it can be excrutiatingly slow and at other times go almost as fast as at home. More of the former than the latter.

Depending on ship's location, Internet access may not be available all of the time. And sometimes the ship's Internet equipment breaks down meaning no access until they can fix it.
