Hi All,

Just wondering if any one has done their PADI Open Water Certification in Fort Lauderdale.

We are thinking of trying this this fall before our Allure of the Seas Western Itinerary so that we could dive in Cozumel.

Looking for a good shop to look into.

Thanks for all reply's

We've been diving almost daily over the past two weeks and have been getting our tanks from Lauderdale Diver on 17th Street. My girlfriend, her husband, and two sons got certified by them and were very happy.

They are great people.

If you are thinking of trying scuba diving I highly suggest you contact a local dive shop close to you to try a Discover Scuba class. If you are looking a become a Open Water Diver it requires you to read a book and complete a test for the theory part of the course. After completing the book work there are a few Confined water dives that you must complete to prove that you understand what is needed to dive in Open Water. Once that is complete you also have to complete 2 Open Water Logged Dives in order to complete the basic Open Water Course. All in all it would take a couple of complete days of work and diving in order to complete the course and become certified.

I would suggest that you look into contacting a dive shop in Cozumel and organizing the Discover Scuba class for you and your family there rather than trying to complete the course in Florida(unless you are planning several days in Florida before your cruise).

You can now do all the book and class work by computer b4 you head for Florida

https://www.padi.com/elearning-scuba-registration/default.aspx

Then you hook up with a participating dive shop and can complete the entire open water course in two days.

dd did this over spring break a couple of years ago. We used Sea Dwellers in Key Largo

day one, take a short written test to confirm you've grasped the book lessons. Then, over to the pool for a session to complete all pool requirements - about 2 hours. break for lunch then meet at their boat for a two tank dive completing dives one and two.

Come back next morning for two tanks completing dives three and four and you are done by noon. Sea Dwellers actually proved two additional dives in their price - afternoon the same day. All the dives are in Pennekamp Park.

This is just one example - many shops participate in this program but point is you can save vacation time if you do the book work ahead of time and at your own pace . . . You do want to make your shop arrangement ahead of time.

Thank you for the replies.

Hubby is certified and our friend had started but never finished the course, I would like to try. I have done some research so have an idea what we are looking at to complete the course but we live in Canada so there is no way I'm getting in the cold water up here to try. Warm water or nothing.

Capt_BJ that is exactly what I was looking at doing, hopefully I can find someone in Ft. Lauderdale who will work on the same time frame.

Blue Herons thank you for the suggestion I will send them an email to see if they can fit us in.

Thanks!!!

or change your days and spend them in Key Largo!!!! You can stay at a small quaint 'old Keys' place, on the west side of the island ... do your dives in the Keys and enjoy many Keys hangouts. IMO better than Ft Lauderdale

minutes from the Holiday Inn which is the pool Sea Dwellers uses and their boat dock is just behind . . .

That sounds really nice but unfortunately DH is a "if it aint broke don't fix it kinda guy" so Fort Lauderdale is set. But hopefully I will get to dive with him in Cozemel :D

But I do keep working on him ..... maybe some day!

Good thing I choose cruising for our Honeymoon
