SeaGypsies Posted August 9, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 9, 2013 Boarding the famous horn tootin' Westerdam in Seattle for an Alaskan cruise in Sept. Do the ships still toot their horns when leaving these ports? One person's review said she didn't hear the horn when leaving Seattle. Just want to make sure. Keith1010 Posted August 9, 2013 #2 Share Posted August 9, 2013 If I remember correctly ships are prohibited from doing this now. Keith
MommaBear55 Posted August 9, 2013 #3 Share Posted August 9, 2013 The rules on whether or not the ship sound the signal varies by port. It is regulated by International Maritime Law.
SeaGypsies Posted August 9, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted August 9, 2013 If I remember correctly ships are prohibited from doing this now. Keith Is this just for Western departure ports, I wonder? I remember the "best sounding horn" contests for the ships departing Ft. Lauderdale. Just saw your post, MamaBear. Thanks.

I think (and I say I think because sure enough someone will correct me if I am wrong) that the ships are prohibited from doing this in Alaska. But my memory might be wrong on this one. huskyguy Posted August 9, 2013 #6 Share Posted August 9, 2013 It is port-specific. In Juneau and Ketchikan, the naturalist and destination speakers are not allowed to broadcast until away from downtown - in the other ports there are no restrictions.
