Is a suit required for evening?

Recommended Posts

My husband asked me to post this question: does he need to bring a suit for the evenings or can he get by with a sport jacket, tie and khakis? Are khakis appropriate for formal nights? We are traveling on the Navigator, Mediterranean cruise later this month. Thanks for any guidance... we don't want him to be tacky!

The only time jacket and tie are required is on the formal nights. You will see men those nights in everything from kaiki's and sport coat to a tux.

We were just on the Navigator in early July. This is a great cruise. You will have a lot of fun if you don't run in to a lot of Italians on it. We found out they are very rude, especially their teenagers.

Have fun!

You will see a wide range of attire on formal night. Some men will have tuxedos, some suit and tie, some sport coat and tie, some sport coat and no tie, some khakis and a polo shirt, and probably some in shorts.

You can certainly "get by" with a sportscoat and slacks.....

In reality, around and about the ship, you will see folks in all manner of dress. It's mainly in the dining room where the "formality" is on formal nights. Now,Hubby and I don't change back into casual clothes, if we take the time to look spectacular, but many will!

A jacket and tie are never required, they are suggested. To the op it is your choice if he wants to wear a suit or not.

And really what was the point of the Italian comment other then to just be rude?

The days of formal attire are slowly leaving us. I don't know if that's good or bad, but it's a fact. He can wear what ever he wants as long as it looks half way decent on any night. So avoid the hassle and let it go. Have fun on your cruise.

Actually a jacket and tie is NOT required on formal nights RCCL's dress code is a only a "Suggested Guideline" and is not mandatory. States so on it's website : http://www.royalcaribbean.com/customersupport/faq/details.do?pagename=frequently_asked_questions&pnav=5&snav=2&faqId=255&faqSubjectId=334&faqSubjectName=Life+Onboard&faqType=faq

It seems that it is "suggested".

The last cruise we went on I rented tuxedos for my son, his cousin and me. 2 were from mens warehouse (we picked up in CA and returned in FLL) and 1 from the ship (kind of a long story as to the why we did this - it was poor planning on my part (ok, i guess not that long of a story)).

Without a doubt I was glad we did this. We got compliments everywhere we went on both formal nights and the pictures we took looked amazing. I know its not for everyone, but I would do it again.

One thing I have learned (at least for myself) is that I would rather be over dressed than uncomfortable all night worrying about being under dressed. That being said, I couldn't have cared less about what others were or weren't wearing. To each their own.

Have your husband wear what he would be comfortable in

I have not brought a suit since our 2nd cruise...I then learned it was NOT REQUIRED....I do bring a sports jacket and one tie, which I wear with a pair Docker slacks....although I have not worn the tie in the last 8-10 cruises....it is for emergencies.....

I understand the attraction for some people to get all spiffied up in formal attire, and that's Ok.....but it is also Ok not to...

Like someone else said, it is slowly becoming a thing of the past.....

They used to gave Caribbean Night, and it was suggested everyone wear something "Tropical" such as a Hawaiian shirt for the men....well that also slowly died away.....

A suit or coat is NOT necessary, don't bother packing if you don't want to. Period. Regardless of what the dress code snobs here may say. There will be lots of guys in the MDR without coats and/or ties. And life will go on:D In fact I think the dumbest look on board is the guys with ties but no jacket.

Because people, especially teenagers, from other countries are never rude?

We took this cruise last year and loved it. We met quite a few Italians on board, and they were very nice. Rude people can come from anywhere.

Gee, if you didn't want to see "another dress code thread", why did you even open the thread since dress code was obviously the subject?

Don't let it bother you.

I don't mind reading new threads on old subjects because it allows me to get some new input without going through pages and pages of old postings.

Check out the XDA-Developers threads that can go for hundreds of pages if you want an example...:o

Seriously?

Keep your bigoted opinions to yourself.

Talk about painting an entire population with a wide, ugly, xenophobic brush. Some opinions should be kept to yourself and not shared. I will do your fellow countrymen the courtesy of not assuming they are all like you.

My husband take silk pants and silk shirts (like Tommy Bahamas) for all nights but formal. On formal nights on 7 night cruises we dress to the max, him in a tux and me in a formal. On 3 nighters we do not do formal, I just wear a sundress and he does his silk pants/shirt combo.

I did that on the Allure and did not feel out of place (toss in a pocket square and you'll be dressed sharper than folks in suits and tuxedos). That's a Caribbean cruise though. European may be a bit more formal.

The jacket also worked for smart casual. I just dropped the tie.
