2cruisers2cruises Posted August 11, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 11, 2013 Hiya everyone, Myself and partner are going for the first time on RCI Liberty of the Seas 15th September. We fancy going to visit Herculaneum, (from Naples)but more of a solowanderaround tour than a guided tour. Partner nervous of attempting this in case we somehow miss the ships' departure. Is it easy to get there by taxi/bus or train?and how long roughly would it take or is it just worth admitting defeat and going on a ship organised cruise? I am sorry if this topic has been done to death, but I haven't found any info out yet. Thank you in advance
paul929207 Posted August 11, 2013 #2 Share Posted August 11, 2013 We took the tram from right out side the cruise terminal to the train station and then the Circumvesuvius train to Herculaneum. You can buy the ticket at the kiosk across the street for the terminal. It was about 6 Euros r/t pp. The man their will point you to the tram stop. At the train station, about 6 stops, find the Circumvesuvius train. Ask at ticket sales if you are uncertain. Return trip is the reverse. I suggest you get Rick Steves' book Med Cruise Ports. Great for DIY.

cruisemom42 Posted August 11, 2013 #6 Share Posted August 11, 2013 There's a long thread on Herculaneum on the Italy Ports of Call boards that may give you more info: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1618858 Ignore the last portion of the thread which is mostly requests for my notes. :o
Keith1010 Posted August 11, 2013 #7 Share Posted August 11, 2013 I would also do visit the Italy Ports Of Call Board in addition to the thread that cruisemom42 provided. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=595 Keith
euro cruiser Posted August 11, 2013 #8 Share Posted August 11, 2013 If you are interesting in going by taxi there is a fixed fare of 70 Euro, round trip, which includes a two-hour stop at the excavations. You can download and print the Naples taxi fares from the city web site here: http://www.comune.napoli.it/flex/cm/pages/ServeBLOB.php/L/IT/IDPagina/1193. The third pdf is in English. Hlitner Posted August 11, 2013 #9 Share Posted August 11, 2013 The train from Naples to Ercolani Scavi (the station for Herculaneum runs every 30 min and takes about 15 min. That train (the Circumvesuviania Line) is quite cheap (not sure of the exact fare but it should be no more then 5 Euros) and reliable. You can also get there by bus (even cheaper) but I am not sure of the routes. If you post on the Ports of Call /Italy board there is at least one person (Euro Cruiser) who is pretty expert when it comes to the buses. Missing the ship is not even an issue since Herculaneum is relatively close to Naples. The worst case scenario (this is what we like to call Plan B) you can always grab a taxi back to the port. But given the long port day, and the fact that you would probably spend no more then 2-3 hours at the ruins...time will not be an issue.
