chriscc Posted August 15, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 15, 2013 From the UK so don't know much about taxis versus private cars in New York. I need to travel from a Times Square hotel to the cruise port of Cape Liberty on a Saturday and after my cruise 2 weeks later on a saturday travel from the Port Liberty cruise port to JFK airport. Is it better to arrange a private car rather than a taxi for each journey? How much will it cost? Can anyone recommend a good private car company if that is the way to go? Any info would be useful.:)

We're The Groupnors Posted August 15, 2013 #3 Share Posted August 15, 2013 If you take a taxi from Manhattan to NJ, which is outside the 5 boroughs, you will pay 2x the meter rate, so probably a private car would be more economical. I have used VIP Connection in the past, and they have always been reliable.
RL1180 Posted August 15, 2013 #4 Share Posted August 15, 2013 Just a word of warning on taking a taxi, make sure to leave quite a bit of extra time if you plan on catching a cab. Many of the New York City cabs will refuse fares outside of New York, especially during busy periods. There have been times I've seen people hail 10+ cabs and wait 30+ minutes before they will finally find a cab willing to take them out of New York, so plan to leave early! A private car, while probably more expensive, will be much more reliable then the cabs will on that route.
ceba Posted August 15, 2013 #5 Share Posted August 15, 2013 Our hotel called a town car (private car). It was much cheaper than a taxi. We liked the driver so much he gave us his number so we could call him after the cruise to pick us up at the cruise terminal and take us to the airport. It was a smooth process and we were very glad not to have to stand around the port with everyone else to wait for a taxi. Im sorry, I just cant remember his name. Clarea Posted August 15, 2013 #8 Share Posted August 15, 2013 Taxi's usually give you an estimated fare, which may not include tolls and wait time. A private car service usually gives you an all inclusive rate, so if you run into bad traffic, you don't end up paying more money.

A private car service usually gives you an all inclusive rate, so if you run into bad traffic, you don't end up paying more money. That's not how it works for a trip from NY City to NJ (other than to Newark Airport). NY City taxis are not required to take you anywhere in NJ other than to Newark Airport. If they do agree to a trip to Cape Liberty or elsewhere in NJ (other than EWR) the trip is not based on a metered taxi fare, but rather on whatever price the driver sets (and that you agree to), plus tolls and tip. Car services quote a fixed rate, but they are generally not "all inclusive". Tolls and tip are generally not included, with the possible exception of some companies that are looking to rip off unsuspecting visitors to NY by quoting an all inclusive rate that exceeds what you would normally pay to a legitimate car service. In any case it's imperative that the OP makes reservations with a reputable car service for his transportation to and from Cape Liberty. Two of the largest services based in NY are: Dial 7 http://www.dial7.com Carmel http://www.carmellimo.com

Got2Cruise Posted August 15, 2013 #12 Share Posted August 15, 2013 Sometimes car services try to offer you a ride from the street without you calling but don't accept. There is a slang phrase "gypsy cab" and they are illegal.
