San Juan Passport Question

We are sailing on Carnival Valor in January and we both have passport cards. I know we don't need passports to fly to San Juan, but will we need them for the cruise? I'm not sure what the laws are regarding passports in places like Barbados??? Will our passport cards get us where we need to go? I'm just not sure if it works the same as when we left from Miami and traveled to the Bahamas.

Since we have the passport cards we'd rather not spend the money on the passport books. Yes, I know all the pros and cons of not having one. We always purchase our excursions through Carnival and make sure we are back on board in plenty of time. ;)

San Juan is a US port and this would qualify as a closed loop cruise. As for Barbados this is what I found on Barbados.org "Cruise ship passengers who are "in-transit" and stay less than 24 hours are not required to carry a valid passport." (The State Department page for Barbados is very ambiguous but does suggest that cruise ship passengers do not need a passport.)

Thank you for your help! This makes me feel better. ;)
