Jewelry?

How many of you ladies bring your real wedding rings and other real jewelry on vacation? The reason I ask is because some of the islands are poor and wondering if it's safe?

I think you may actually be asking two different questions . . .

Do I bring my real wedding rings and other jewelry on vacation? YES.

Do I often wear them off the ship onto the islands? NO.

Typically, I leave my rings & other jewelry in the safe in my cabin when I go on excursions both to keep them safe and because I don't find them necessary to wear. I never wear my jewelry snorkeling or to the beach at home so I wouldn't on vacation either. I know others will disagree and if you search you may find some lively threads on the topic. In the end, you have to make the choice that is right for you.

Ditto here- we have cheap travel rings that we use in place of our real wedding rings, but I do bring other jewelry to wear on formal nights and keep it in the safe. I wear nothing off the ship so as not to be a target, why take the chance?

I bring my good wedding rings and a couple of other things, but like all the others I only wear it on the ship. In port I usually just wear a plain gold wedding band. In my dotage I have taken to wearing costume jewelry more and more, just because it is fun. I try to buy jewelry in ports to go with the theme of the cruise ie: conch shell jewelry for Caribbean cruises, turquoise for Arizona, you get the idea. So travelling new places = new jewelry, and since it's costume it's affordable. So, Fun.

I agree with above posters- I always bring much of my good jewelry, but wear it mostly on the ship, and lock it in the safe for ports. I have seen plenty of cruisers wear a lot of jewelry off the ship, and I'm sure it usually works out fine, but as someone above said, why take the chance of making myself a target? Hey, I even turn my rings around when I get on the subway here in NYC!

Totally agree ! I never wear anything off the ship I wouldn't mind losing. Costume jewelry seems to fit the bill, especially on NCL with resort casual attire. I have been leaving all but my wedding rings home. Just my choice :)

My wife wears her wedding ring and diamond earings just about anywhere we go. That is what they are for.

Sure, these islands are poor, but it is not like they jump and rob people for jewelry.

(wedding ring is well under $5,000 in value... guessing those with massive rocks would do things differently)

I always wear and take real jewelry on the cruise. I'll wear it all over the ship, but I don't wear it ashore (the exception is Alaska). Besides the possibility of theft, the humidity makes my fingers swell up and rings are uncomfortable. I even have a really cheap watch I travel with, and my every day watch isn't that special. I have to have a watch, but only take the cheap one to the beach, etc.

I bring my good jewelry and have worn it off the ship all over the world. In some cities I do turn my rings around, and we were warned in Naples to take our necklaces off, but other than that, not a problem at all.

The only other time I take it into consideration is when we're trying to bargain at a shop. I turn my rings there too so they don't think we will overpay. ;)

In Bermuda, I wore my good jewelry. In the Caribbean ports, I wear a plain watch and lock my good watch and engagement ring in the safe. I have worn inexpensive gold earrings in port and a gold wedding band. If hot, I leave off the wedding band. I believe in wearing nice jewelry and enjoying it every day but I don't want to attract attention.
