Beach in Freeport/Port Lucaya

Hi,

Last summer my girlfriends and I cruised to the Bahamas. We got off the ship in Freeport and took a taxi over to Port Lucaya. We found a "beach" just down from the marketplace but you had to walk on this very narrow path that was on the side of a parking lot. It was flanked with a fence on one side and woods on another. It was pretty scary walking down there and the beach was a 10ft stretch of rocks and a little sand. I'm going back to the same ports with my family in December. Is there a different beach or beach access other than the path we took? Surely there's got to be something better. :) I'm traveling with my 3 and 4 yr old and we would like to shop for a bit at the marketplace then let them play at the beach. :)
