Funbobby68 Posted August 20, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 20, 2013 Hey all , thought it might be handy to start a thread to have people chime in about getting the drink package for one when there is more than one to a room , maybe what ships are letting it slide or if DR note was needed .....ect Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app
SnappyNappi Posted August 20, 2013 #2 Share Posted August 20, 2013 The Unlimited Drink packages, in their current state, meaning that all adults in a cabin 21 or older have to purchase the same alcoholic drink package if one wants it, it would never be an option for us. It is extremely expensive and while it would pay for DH, it would NEVER make sense for me because I don't drink (I'll stick with the soda package, thanks.) So it will never be an option for us unless he were able to get it for himself and I was able to opt out without an issue.
LMaxwell Posted August 20, 2013 #3 Share Posted August 20, 2013 I would consider purchasing for one as my fiancee doesn't drink. Or a modified drink package (I posted about this other day). If we are both required to purchase I won't purchase it. How appropriate that a drink post is by Fun Bobby. I hope others get the reference

DisneyKidsDad Posted August 20, 2013 #5 Share Posted August 20, 2013 If they let only one person in the cabin buy it, then what would stop him/her from getting free drinks for everyone else in the cabin?
LMaxwell Posted August 20, 2013 #6 Share Posted August 20, 2013 If they let only one person in the cabin buy it, then what would stop him/her from getting free drinks for everyone else in the cabin? Nothing. That is why they don't officially offer it for one person only. I have proposed a middle of the road package; say $30 per day for a fixed number of drinks, applicable per person. Even if you do share it doesn't matter because you have a fixed limit per week or per day and once that is exhausted you revert to paying regular fare if you want more. I would be customer #1 to sign up.
xxoocruiser Posted August 20, 2013 #7 Share Posted August 20, 2013 If they let only one person in the cabin buy it, then what would stop him/her from getting free drinks for everyone else in the cabin? I'm told the Bar tender will dispense 2 drinks at the same time for one account. There is a time limit in which the computer keeps track of from the time you got a drink as to when another drink can be obtained from that same account in an attempt to minimize sharing. X bottles of wine for $XX over the time of your cruise. So in this case it would be like... 25 premium alcoholic drinks (from a list) for $180 over the course of the cruise. Still a savings, but guaranteed revenue for the line. I like that and would consider that kind of pricing as well. Another suggestion that I have is drink coupons... I cruised Carnival for a couple of short cruises a few years back and in their 'gifts and gear' equivalent they have drink coupons that you can purchase ahead of your cruise... They are about $12 for a 2-drink coupon or $30 for a 5 drink coupon... something like that -might not be a great savings, but it gives you the ability to pre-purchase drinks so that you have them in your 'bank' before you leave and don't have to be charged for them. I don't have the exact specifics and don't cruise on Carnival anymore, but I thought that was a great idea. There was someone who also posted about a Celebrity package that is a premium NON-alcoholic beverage package that allows unlimited soda, specialty coffees and frozen non-alcoholic drinks for a set per day price. I'd LOVE that kind of package as well - expecially if I could purchase the unlimited premium alcoholic package for hubby and the premium non-alcoholic package for myself. That would work like a charm for us (and I'm sure others as well).
Rare playingpossum Posted August 20, 2013 #9 Share Posted August 20, 2013 I knew someone who was on one of the first oasis cruises that they had a drink package. He was able to purchase one for himself and he even admitted it was too easy to abuse the way it was set up origionally. I don't think it took too long for Royal to see a system that was going to lose money hence what they offer now.
Funbobby68 Posted August 20, 2013 Author #10 Share Posted August 20, 2013 I had the package last cruise , we had two cabins , so booked it with one child in each , so skirted around the rules that way , my wife is not a big drinker so work out well she purchased about 10 drinks all cruise , and I drank like a fish :) . I don't see what the point in trying to bootleg drinks for other , that's usually what make these programs disappear , some people ruining it for everyone Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app
Frankmac Posted August 20, 2013 #11 Share Posted August 20, 2013 I have written this is so many drinks threads that I've lost track. On Liberty in June I purchased the package for myself only. I informed them that my wife is a very light drinker, which is true, and they accepted that.
reedl Posted August 20, 2013 #12 Share Posted August 20, 2013 I do not drink at all, and my wife will probably have one or two drinks the entire cruise. OTOH, I drink a lot of soda. In fact I have a soda bar gun in my kitchen. So I will purchase the soda package for both of us. But the soda I drink is caffeine free and diet, so I will sleep and not gain more weight. I cannot understand going on a cruise to get plastered. If you are drinking so much per day that you spend more than the individual prices on the drinks, why not stay at home, put on a beach video on the TV, and save your money? I may try to give a call and purchase it for just my husband and see what happens. I know for a fact that I cannot do that online.
TBone2K Posted August 20, 2013 #14 Share Posted August 20, 2013 Hey all , thought it might be handy to start a thread to have people chime in about getting the drink package for one when there is more than one to a room , maybe what ships are letting it slide or if DR note was needed .....ect I would suggest not making this a deciding factor in picking your cruise for two reasons: 1. The exception does not disprove the rule and 2. Staff changes on the ship, so the relaxed attitude on a specific ship may change by the time your vacations comes up. However as others have experienced, it pays to ask nicely when you buy the package. Also if there is a documented reason why your roomie doesn't drink (i.e. allergies, AA, etc), have it handy. I am sorry, but why does that matter to you? No one said we are getting plastered. But with the price of drinks, you don't need to drink that many to make the package worth it. To have 7-9 drinks during the entire day is not that much, does not been you are trashed.

Doesn't seem to be a problem on Celebrity. But then again, the Celebrity package is far superior to the RCI one for the same price. It is one of the few things that, in my opinion, RCI has done a TERRIBLE job with. The package and it's restrictions make no sense whatsoever. In particular when they have such a great version on their sister line. I find it baffling.

I do not care at all about these alcohol packages, because I will never purchase one, but I wanted to comment on your comment. I agree that having 7-9 drinks throughout the day does NOT equal "plastered", and that "breaking even" or "winning" on the package price works on that arithmetic. But if you count port days, which are a minimum of three on a 7 night cruise, you "up" the number needed in a shorter amount of time to "get your money's worth". It's not as simply as "7 per day". :)

We agree it is not worth it on port intensive cruises, but for others that want to buy it, they still may have that many during the day and not be plastered. Everyone is different as to what they can handle. I can have 6 beers over the course of the evening after we get back from the islands and in no way am I drunk. You are talking 5 to midnight. that is one beer an hour. Not going to get drunk on that.
Funbobby68 Posted August 20, 2013 Author #20 Share Posted August 20, 2013 Honestly I , on day one and two ,was ahead of the curve , more a game but day three , just had to slow down , was never plastered , but did sleep good at the end of the day . I did like the chance to try a few other drinks that I would never normally try , but with that said , if I ordered it I drank it , hate to see waste , did learn that I will never ever have an old fashion again Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app

It does not matter to me what you do with yourself. It is purely my opinion and nothing more. If you want to walk around with a buzz on then more power to you. I prefer to be completely knowing what is going on in my life. Again, just my opinion and nothing more. My mother was a severe alcoholic for more than 7 years after my father died. She drank to excess and even had to be brought to the hospital with a BAC of .38 They said that she was lucky to be alive. Around three years ago she stopped drinking after this incident and life has been much better for all. My kids actually want to go to her house again. I have seen the effects of living life always needing that next drink. It ain't pretty!
