cruisingbajan Posted August 20, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 20, 2013 Hi guys, my wife and I have always pick cabins on deck 7 mid-ship simply because on that deck you are with easy walking distance of just about everything. I however am looking at trying a lower deck to get a "better price" on our cruise. I would like to hear from those who have had cabins on the lower decks or both on the pros/cons of the lower decks. Any and all comments/recommendations are welcomed. Thanks in Advance.:)

Any and all comments/recommendations are welcomed. Thanks in Advance.:) A "pro" is that you can walk down from your room and up to your room for excursions and not have to wait for the elevators. We are like you and usually stay on Decks 6-8. Once we were on Deck 2 and we really liked the ease of returning to the room after being ashore all day! However, we missed the balcony more and returned to the upper floors :o

AdventureMatthew Posted August 20, 2013 #6 Share Posted August 20, 2013 Lower deck will provide you a bit more walking exercise. Gives you an excuse to grab that one additional snack through out the day. Aslo the lower decks are much quieter. If you have low and outside room you hear the waves against the side of the ship. Puts you right to sleep.
DobberDog Posted August 20, 2013 #7 Share Posted August 20, 2013 We have only ever stayed on Riviera (deck 1) or Main (deck 2) and I love those decks. We always get an oceanview and I love waking up in the morning to the sound of the water. I love how quiet it is down there. you dont have to worry about dance clubs or lounges above you or anything like that. I dont mind the extra walking. dotheyes Posted August 20, 2013 #8 Share Posted August 20, 2013 we have found the lowest deck to be the best to catch an elevator (can't walk the steps any more) The elevator comes to the lowest floor and everyone gets off' so you don't have to get people to move to let you in. dot We have only ever stayed on Riviera (deck 1) or Main (deck 2) and I love those decks. Velvetwater Posted August 20, 2013 #10 Share Posted August 20, 2013 We were on deck 4 and although it is slightly higher we found it an excellent place to be near dining, shops, casino (which we didnt use) and show lounges and not far down from the lido. This was on the Legend, the spirit class ships have those excellent french door cabins with an interior price but fresh sea air and view if you pick right. Aplmac Posted August 20, 2013 #11 Share Posted August 20, 2013 Last few cruises, I've been booking insides, on Deck 2 -Main amidships...and I don't feel a thing hardly, even when she's headed up-weather to Barbados (which is where you will feel it, if you're going to feel it at all). ;) We walk half the length of the ship along Deck 2 to the aft Restaurant -and go up one flight of stairs to Deck 3 (-or 4 if our table is on the restaurant's upper level). Couldn't be simpler. Folks scoff at insides? I scoff at the un-necessary expense of much-vaunted balconies, up high where all motion is exaggerated! :D . cruisingbajan Posted August 20, 2013 Author #12 Share Posted August 20, 2013 Thanks for all the responses guys. We normally do insides on whatever deck we choose. The room is just a place to sleep for us. These lower decks certainly sound like a viable option and the lack of motion will certainly be a huge selling point for my wife. Will give these decks a try next cruise.:)

robear14 Posted August 20, 2013 #14 Share Posted August 20, 2013 It all depends on what type of room and the location. I was in an interior forward room on a lower deck on the Legend, and it was a fantastic location - near the bottom of a stairwell and near the elevators, but far enough away that you didn't hear any noise at all - the room was extremely quiet. This was great after a show was done, and we wanted to get to our room quickly. Since it was near the stairs/elevators, we were never walking down a long hallway to get to the room. We had an interior mid-ship room on the Empress deck on the Dream. With cabins above and below, this was also a very quiet room. For whatever reason, it seemed like we still had to walk a long way to get to everything. Our tablemates had a cove balcony and they said their room was very loud at night - "it was like they were rolling bowling balls and hitting things" was one of the comments. I don't know what he was referring to, but they must've been near some an active behind-the-scenes area. The interior room we had on the Fascination was "good". It was probably near a service area/closet for the crew because we heard some noises at random times. It was also an adjoining room, so there was a thin door between our cabin and the one next to us. Although we never met them, they sounded like an older couple that had nothing better to do than complain about everything. It was our first cruise so we were having a blast and it was funny to just listen to them go on and on about stupid stuff. My favorite comment that I'll never forget was when they were going over the itemized bill on the last night and I heard the wife shout, "This is all ****ed up!" The closer you are to the keel (centerline of the vessel)the less side-to-side movement you'll feel! You are closer to that center-line than the Ocean Views across the hallway from you. _________________________________ VALOR has some unusually-placed cabins smack on the centerline. Check out Deck 6 here http://www.cruisecheap.com/c/deckplan.php?SailDate=&ShipID=212&DeckNumber=6 and they're just slightly forward of amidships in the stem-to-stern-movement situation. You won't feel much in grade 4E Cabins 6287, 6289 etc all eleven of them. I have checked other decks but 6 seems to be the only one for these centerline cabins. . LandlockedCruiser01 Posted August 20, 2013 #18 Share Posted August 20, 2013 Pros: * It's usually nothing but cabins around you, so the hallways are very quiet. * There's less swaying if you're close to the waterline. * It's very quick and easy to get to your cabin after returning from ports. * You can sometimes hear the waves splash against the hull. Cons: * You'll hear the noise from the engines (not all parts of the ship). * It takes a long time to get to any public spaces. * You don't get the vast panoramic views that the higher decks get. Catrin Posted August 20, 2013 #20 Share Posted August 20, 2013 We have stayed on Deck 1 or 2 several times over the years... and while nothing beats a great Lido Deck Balcony, or the Aft Wrap we had on Deck 7... we actually like staying on the lower decks. Pros - There are Ocean View Connecting Cabins on Decks 1 and 2. Perfect for families with kids... keep those doors open and it is like having one large room! Pros Deck 1 - Cabins above you. It can be quite quiet down there. Pros - Coming and Going from Ports. No elevators to wait. Just climb one flight of stairs and you are home. Pros - The Ocean View cabins are the same size of the Balcony Cabins without the Balconies. So they actually FEEL like they are larger! Cons - those darn elevators. Sometimes, just when you need an elevator.... they are ALL on Deck 10. It can be a long wait until one hits Deck 1. Or.. maybe you are lucky... just luck of the draw. Another con is when you are on Deck 9 and have to go to 1. Inevitably, the elevator will have to stop at each floor. Staying on Deck 7 is so much easier here. Cons - we cruise with our kids .... and there are always tons of families on Decks 1 and 2. If you are against kids, you may wish to reconsider the placement of your cabin. It is not a guarantee, but a consideration. We would not hesitate to stay "down there" again! Catrin
Bear-n-Babe Posted August 21, 2013 #21 Share Posted August 21, 2013 I have only been on one cruise, and we were on Deck 2 (Main) on the Sensation. Granted, with the smaller ship, getting around wasn't bad, and the wife and I just came off an intense 90 day weight-loss/muscle-building program, and we were toned and in shape for the stair climbing. We picked the lower deck, because the daughter and I both get seriously car sick, so we didn't want to take any chances. We had two connecting ocean view cabins. Son and I slept in one room, and wife and daughter in the other. I liked "seeing out" the large window, but I and son, both of us hate being cooped up, and I just couldn't spend very much time in the room because of feeling closed in. Therefore, my next cruise will have a balcony. Even at home, I have to step outside to get that fresh air or I just don't feel right. I have been reading so much about the placement of the cabin, taking into consideration those 'things' that cause noise. In looking at deck plans for most of the Carnavel ships, usually the Empress deck is sandwiched in between two "accommodations" decks, which reduces the noise from public area decks above or below. FOr my next cruise, it is going to be a 2nd honeymoon type of deal, so I was thinking of treating the Mrs to a cabin in the Cloud 9 Spa level, BUT ... I'm not sure about my motion sickness tolerating that high up of a deck and at the front of the ship. The only time I was bothered by the motion of the ship on our cruise, was on the last day when the ship was going at a faster pace, and I was up in the gym in the top deck. I couldn't wait to get out of there and back down a couple levels.
