rln44 Posted August 21, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 21, 2013 HAL used to be our favorite cruise line and we have taken about a dozen cruises with them-but none for the past 5 years. This stems from our last cruise on the Ryndam when we were surprised to find that our outside stateroom did not include a mini bar. Years ago this would not have been a big issue for us but my wife is now an insulin dependent diabetic and we found that dumping her insulin into an ice bucket to be inconvenient and messy. I have examined their brochures to determine which staterooms have minibars and it appears that only veranda and above staterooms have them. Am I missing something here-even Carnival has mini bars in it's inside staterooms. What is the experience of others-does HAL actually have mini bars in their inside and outside staterooms, but does not list them?
Purvis1231 Posted August 21, 2013 #2 Share Posted August 21, 2013 When we sailed, we had a mini-bar, and I thought all the room had them. FYI, insulin can be stored at room temperature for a month. I hope you are plannig a cruise longer than a month but if it is shorter than a month, the insulin will be fine on the counter.
OVgirl Posted August 21, 2013 #3 Share Posted August 21, 2013 I think you are looking for cabins that include a fridge/cooler rather than a mini bar. The Signature and Vista class ships have coolers in every cabin. On the smaller ships (R & S class) you can rent one from Ship Services to have in your cabin. Not sure if any cabins on these ships have a cooler.
jtl513 Posted August 21, 2013 #4 Share Posted August 21, 2013 It is still the case that on the R&S class ships only cabins with verandas have the coolers, while on the other 7 ships all cabins have them. On the R&S ships you can rent one for $2/day, and it's best to call and reserve in advance of sailing.
Krazy Kruizers Posted August 21, 2013 #5 Share Posted August 21, 2013 On the Ryndam, Statendam, Veendam, Maasdam, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Volendam, and Zaandam -- only balcony and verandah cabins have the mini refrigerators (coolers). ALL cabins on the Westerdam, Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Noordam, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam have mini refrigerators (coolers). I do not know anything about the Prinsendam. If you sail on one of the R or S class ships listed in the first paragraph in a non balcony or non Verandah cabin, you can rent a mini refrigerator through Ship Services -- 1-800- 541- 1576. It has been costing $2 a day.

Riversedge Posted August 21, 2013 #7 Share Posted August 21, 2013 Not hard at all to order a fridge. I do it every trip. I fill out a medical form that shows a necessity. I suppose that's in case they have more frig orders than they can fill. I know my insulin can sit for a month at room temperature but I like to have extras along in case of emergency and if I don't need them it would be a waste to get them warm. And then of course the frig also comes in handy for my wine!

John, KK has copied that post before, and I have let her know the status of the Prinsendam. I guess she didn't read it.
Typhoon1 Posted August 21, 2013 #9 Share Posted August 21, 2013 If you need a refrigerator to keep insulin cold, contact ships services. They will provide one for a modest fee.

My mini bar was 6 cans of pop (i.e. Coke, etc.) and 1 bottle of water sitting on the desk (counter top).
luvcruisn' Posted August 29, 2013 #11 Share Posted August 29, 2013 Eurodam - I was in an inside cabin in April, and had a "cooler." It was great. I used it for soda, juice, milk, and cheese that I stored as I needed to eat something when I took some medication in the evening. It was also nice to have something in there when I came back from excursions, without having to go to the Lido, which was at the opposite end of the ship from my cabin. When I was in an inside cabin on the Prinsendam in Nov./09, I had a "cooler." All of the cabins had them. It seemed to me that the "cooler" in my cabin on the Eurodam was actually a little colder than the one on the Prinsendam.

Some insulin cannot be stored at room temperature, which is one that I use. I found that on my last cruise the mini-bar kept it nice and cool, with no problems. My biggest problem is getting them to give me a needle disposal kit, sent in the form and asked the stewards asked the front desk usually takes a couple of days. alwaysfrantic Posted August 29, 2013 #13 Share Posted August 29, 2013 I can't believe HAL would actually charge for one when its a medical necessity. THAT is cheap of them.
