Paccruise Posted August 23, 2013 #2 Share Posted August 23, 2013 Which would you prefer....the Oceanview is bigger inside, but does not have a balcony....which one???? Thanks! Where and when are you going? This information helps with responding. If your going to Alaskian cruise a balcony is best. But if your doing British Isles then a balcony is not a must. So it depends.

Rare JimmyVWine Posted August 23, 2013 #6 Share Posted August 23, 2013 Balcony, unless the price difference is huge. There are so many "upgrade to a balcony for free" sales during the year, coupled with other offers, that getting a balcony rarely costs appreciably more than an OV. For example, the November, 2014 sailing on Island is showing a $200 difference between the two categories. For that price, it would be Balcony all the way. And odds are, there will be re-faring some time in between now and then to get it even lower.

Mom33 Posted August 23, 2013 #8 Share Posted August 23, 2013 On a Panama Canal Cruise, the balcony would be our choice. :D
dorisis Posted August 23, 2013 #9 Share Posted August 23, 2013 Sorry, it's the Panama Canal cruise on the Island Princess in November. We enjoy the balcony for coffee and pastry in the mornings. For the Canal , I like to get out on the deck for a better view than I get on the balcony. We like to have a glass of wine on the balcony before retiring in the evening. aikensbest Posted August 23, 2013 #10 Share Posted August 23, 2013 Which would you prefer....the Oceanview is bigger inside, but does not have a balcony....which one???? Thanks! We have take two cruises to Panama and I can assure you that you will be much happier if you have a balcony cabin. Going thru the locks you can almost reach out an touch the side of the canal or the ship passing next to you. Yes, there are areas you can go to and get a great view, but there is nothing greater than sitting or standing on your balcony with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine as you go thru the canal. Pia1913 Posted August 23, 2013 #11 Share Posted August 23, 2013 Sorry, it's the Panama Canal cruise on the Island Princess in November. \ We were upgraded on this ship (Coral; same ship) in April from an obstructed OV to a mini. The mini was forward on Caribe and didn't have a balcony. What it did have however was access to the secret door right outside. It was like having my own HUGE balcony. So many folks never knew it was there.
Debbdo Posted August 23, 2013 #12 Share Posted August 23, 2013 I prefer a balcony, no matter where we are cruising.I love to sit on the balcony, book in one hand, coffee in the other, watching the world go by.

lovevacadays Posted August 24, 2013 #14 Share Posted August 24, 2013 If the prices are close I say go for the balcony! Especially on a warm weather cruise.

Rare trbarton Posted August 24, 2013 #17 Share Posted August 24, 2013 Once you have a balcony cabin it's hard to go back to anything else. If you choose a balcony get a stateroom on the Caribe deck as the balcony is about 1/3 larger and is covered and uncovered. I'm also on the Island in September 2014 and have balcony aft. Isn't the cruise in September? I don't see any cruises on the Islander for November through the canal. If you would like some photos of my balcony cabin please let me know and I will post some. I'm on a December 20th holiday cruise on the Grand to Hawaii and the balcony cabin is $100 less than an ocean view. Tom :)
AZbeachboy Posted August 24, 2013 #18 Share Posted August 24, 2013 I have been on 2 Panama cruises. I like the balcony but not because of the canal, but for all the other times I can enjoy it. You can watch some of the operation, but viewing is limited at times.

Not true of all balconies on Caribe deck on the Island/Coral. They have a different layout than the Grand-class ships.

Times Prince Posted August 24, 2013 #21 Share Posted August 24, 2013 It's a balcony for us, no matter where the cruise is going. Even if weather doesn't allow being outside, the ability to fill our cabin with fresh uncirculated air is great. But we really like sitting on the balcony and enjoying the world go by. I no this is a little off topic but seeing people are talking about balconies I was wondering if anyone has had a balcony on the Sun Princess on deck 12 and what it is like? We have just been upgraded to one and have never had a balcony before
Alaska0799 Posted August 24, 2013 #23 Share Posted August 24, 2013 What inside the cabin sizes did you find for the two you are comparing? We were concerned about the inside space in a balcony room but were in Dolphin 223 on the Island recently and were pleasantly surprised. Measured inside cabin ourselves at 10x20. Small, covered (which we prefer) balcony. The benefits of having a balcony far outweigh any concerns over inside space--lots more light, fresh air and the sounds of the ship moving through the water. We'll do it again in a heartbeat!
