snoopydo Posted August 24, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 24, 2013 Thinking about taking advantage of one of Avalon's no single supplement cruises and doing a solo cruise. So two questions: Any thoughts on what it might be like on Avalon alone? It says they offer free wifi... is it any good? This is important to me as I work online and will still need to do one hour of work in the morning and one hour int the evening sort of thing. It's such a family type atmosphere I think it would work out great. We met so many wonderful people. The are only about160 passengers so you could meet everyone. Crew is great and so was our ship Wifi worked great. Sometimes in a lock it didn't work but that didn't last too long Do it. You won't be sorry! acruisefan Posted August 24, 2013 #3 Share Posted August 24, 2013 With no single supplement I suspect that there will be other singles on board, so it's not like you would surrounded by only couples.
Got2Cruise Posted August 24, 2013 #4 Share Posted August 24, 2013 Our Internet worked well on the Creativity. Avalon gives you a code to use on your own equipment plus there are two computers on the ship you can use. The Creativity sailed near Paris. If you are near a small village someplace you might not get a connection
bobandjo Posted August 24, 2013 #5 Share Posted August 24, 2013 We did Avalon's Amsterdam - Budapest cruise Jun 23 - Jul 7. Internet in the reception area where the computers were was generally available only when docked in a port. Even in a couple of smaller towns there was no signal. peterdkiwi Posted August 24, 2013 #6 Share Posted August 24, 2013 We were on Avalon Artistry II in July, Basel to Amsterdam, wifi in stateroom for ipad was good 60 to 70% of time, it does depend where the ship is I think, but it allowed me to keep in touch with work in NZ. Should be no problem being solo, only 130 people and all very friendly Enjoy - we have already booked our next Avalon Cruise
webfoot Posted August 25, 2013 #7 Share Posted August 25, 2013 I took advantage of the no single supplement with Avalon last month and had a wonderful trip. I met wonderful fellow travelers who were glad to have me join their dining tabled and being with them on excursions. I used the wifi connection on the ship to keep in touch with family. Don't worry about being alone as you are never alone on the cruise. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
Rare YoungDubFan Posted August 25, 2013 #8 Share Posted August 25, 2013 I did Avalon's Basel to Amsterdam last year on the Felicity. There were at least 3 solo travelers on our cruise and it was not marketed with no single supplement. The great thing about river cruising is the small passenger count on the ships. This really does make it easier to get to know most, if not all, of your fellow travelers. The singles on our ship seemed to fit in well. All meals are open seating, so you have the opportunity to sit wherever you want, and with whomever you want. There were 4, 6, and 8 place tables. The solo travelers were welcome to sit with everyone. On our cruise, there were more seats in the dining room than passengers. This made changing tables even easier. As to wifi - it was free. Connectivity and speed really depended on where the ship was. It seemed to work best when docked. The ships use a satellite system, so a lot depends on the connection. I have a Nook tablet and was able to use it in my cabin, in the lounge, and even up on the sky deck.
