British Isles

Thank you. I did just now check the website and their British Isle looks better with the ports they visit, however after having cruised on the Infinity in an inside (8073) it was very good. Everything about the cruise was good. We are Hal cruisers and will continue to be until a cruise we want to do isn't available. The cabin size of an inside cabin on Princesss does not appeal to us or the price. Thank you though for your suggestion.

You'll see exactly what HAL has to offer if you look at HAL's website.

Mumsy.

I did sit in front of the HAL's website for an hour looking for this before I asked on these boards...they do have a 15 day Celtic, but it goes to the Netherlands I believe...

I wanted a true British Isle experience...Britain, Ireland, Scotland, and I want the option of seeing the Tattoo in Edinburgh. I did check out Princess and they have that itinerary but not sure about that line...I will check out Infinity...thanks for the reply's :)

We did a 12 day Celtic on the Westerdam a couple of years ago, and while it started and ended in Rotterdam, it was all British Isles other than that. It was the best cruise ever (until last year's New Zealand) but it did include the Tattoo. I don't see any that include the Tattoo or even Edinburgh.

I am surprised to find no suitable British Isles cruises by Holland America, nothing for Edinburgh. The two best fits miss by a mile. This 14 day Prinsendam cruise sails round trip from the Netherlands and circles Ireland:

Sun Jul 13 Amsterdam (IJmuiden), Holland 4:00pm

Mon Jul 14 At Sea

Tue Jul 15 St. Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands 7:00am 3:00pm

Wed Jul 16 Scilly Isles, England 8:00am 3:00pm

Thu Jul 17 Dublin, Ireland 8:00am 5:30pm

Fri Jul 18 Liverpool, England 8:00am 5:00pm

Sat Jul 19 Belfast, Northern Ireland 8:00am 5:00pm

Sun Jul 20 At Sea

Mon Jul 21 Killybegs, Ireland 8:00am 5:00pm

Tue Jul 22 Galway, Ireland 8:00am 3:00pm

Wed Jul 23 Waterford (Dunmore East), Ireland 10:00am 6:00pm

Thu Jul 24 Fowey, England 10:00am 6:00pm

Fri Jul 25 St. Malo, France 8:00am 6:00pm

Sat Jul 26 At Sea

Sun Jul 27 Amsterdam (IJmuiden), Holland 7:00am

This 14 day Rotterdam cruise sails round trip from the Netherlands and hits Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland before heading to Norway:

Sat Aug 16 Rotterdam, Holland 4:00pm

Sun Aug 17 At Sea

Mon Aug 18 Waterford (Dunmore East), Ireland 8:00am 5:00pm

Tue Aug 19 Dublin, Ireland 8:00am 5:00pm

Wed Aug 20 Belfast, Northern Ireland 7:00am 5:00pm

Thu Aug 21 Glasgow (Greenock), Scotland 8:00am

Fri Aug 22 Glasgow (Greenock), Scotland 2:00am

Sat Aug 23 Isle of Skye (Portree), Scotland 10:00am 6:00pm

Sun Aug 24 Kirkwall, Scotland 8:00am 5:00pm

Mon Aug 25 Bergen, Norway 8:00am 5:00pm

Tue Aug 26 Alesund, Norway 7:00am 5:00pm

Wed Aug 27 Flam, Norway 7:00am 5:00pm

Thu Aug 28 At Sea

Fri Aug 29 At Sea

Sat Aug 30 Rotterdam, Holland 7:00am

Unless I missed something, Holland America does not have what you want in 2014. Good luck with your search.

Concerned about Princess? Oceania's cruise would be hard to beat:

Tue Jul 1 London (Southampton), England 6:00pm

Wed Jul 2 At Sea

Thu Jul 3 Edinburgh (Leith), Scotland 7:00am 5:30pm

Fri Jul 4 Invergordon, Scotland 9:00am 6:00pm

Sat Jul 5 Kirkwall, Scotland 8:00am 5:00pm

Sun Jul 6 Ullapool, Scotland 8:00am 5:00pm

Mon Jul 7 Belfast, Northern Ireland Noon 8:00pm

Tue Jul 8 Dublin, Ireland 8:00am

Wed Jul 9 Dublin, Ireland 8:00pm

Thu Jul 10 Holyhead, Wales 8:00am 6:00pm

Fri Jul 11 Cork (Cobh), Ireland 8:00am 4:00pm

Sat Jul 12 Portland, England Noon 8:00pm

Sun Jul 13 London (Southampton), England 6:00am

Cunard offers a similar itinerary. I am still surprised that Holland America does not.

Boards I'm glad to hear that you liked your British Isles cruise on the Infinity because we're doing that next year. We and our PCC tried very hard to find something with HAL, but couldn't. So we'll do the British Isles with Celebrity and the Baltics with HAL immediately after. ;)

We are booked on the Ruby Princess for 3 August 2014. We chose August specifically because we wanted to attend the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. If you book, check to be sure the Tattoo is available on the sailing you choose. In 2014 it is available on only two of the sailings.

Insofar as your concern about Princess, we've sailed primarily with HAL but have also sailed four times with Princess. I think the lines are quite comparable, although there are some differences: more pax on Princess due to bigger ships, more entertainment options on Princess, and slightly younger passenger demographics. One thing on Princess that I do not like is that the Skywalker's Lounge is at the stern rather than the bow like HAL's Crow's Nest. Consequently, you have to watch where you've been rather than where you're going.

If you like HAL I think you'll probably like Princess.

Glasgow is only 40 miles from Edinburgh by freeway, so maybe HAL is running Edinburgh tours on the 21 August. Note ship doesn't leave till 2 am.

Also you can fly direct to Edinburgh from New York or from many UK and European cities. I fly LA to London to Edinburgh, sometimes in under 14 hours total, to see family. The August Edinburgh International Festival, Fringe Festival and Book Festival are huge, with many interesting events. There are day coach tours to other parts of the country or you can take the train. Everywhere is really close.

We did the British Isles cruise on the Crown Princess in Aug.2011 and had a wonderful time. We took the ship's excursion to the Tattoo and were not disappointed.

We are HAL fans but have cruised with Princess twice because of itineraries. There are differences but nothing significant or adverse except for the size of the ships. I would say you would not regret taking this cruise with Princess.

A side note FYI. When docked in Liverpool we took the train to Chester in Wales and spent the day there. It was fabulous and made the trip a true "British Isles tour"

The itinerary is important to us, but so is the comfort. The closest we found to the size of cabin (inside or ov) we would enjoy that measures up to Hal was the Inifinity. We checked out Princess including the Crown Princess which we nearly booked several years ago and the Ruby, but inside cabins are too small for us. Note I said for us to be comfortable in, someone else they must be okay.
