Barmy2 Posted August 29, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 29, 2013 Just read a very good review regarding fjord trip with Spirit... Question...does anyone know ,if the have been recently if the Flam rail trip is still running because it had to be cancelled on this persons visit as there had been a fire in one of the road tunnels. We have already pre booked this trip as it is the one we really want to do. PS..what is the best side of the train to sit on when going up the mountain? Cheers Bev.:)
JARRA23 Posted August 29, 2013 #2 Share Posted August 29, 2013 I think its running, It was the Thomson excursion that was cancelled, the train was still running Below is a comment from FB "There was a tunnel fire so no coaches could get to Flam, Thomson just cancelled all trips but the railway did not know, so they said the trains were fully booked but were leaving half empty, lots of unhappy people." "It was a total balls up, I got the 12.20 ticket but luckily the train man let me on the 9.30, it was empty our carriage had 30 free seats, Thomson should be ashamed, they just cancelled all tickets without given the option of just doing the up and down trip"
kruzseeka Posted August 29, 2013 #3 Share Posted August 29, 2013 I would say sit on the right hand side of the carriage going up (facing the front of the train). The track tends to hug the left-hand side of the valley for some distance although you do get some views too on the other side. The big waterfall is on the left but the train stops there for a few minutes so that you can get out and take pictures so you won't miss out on that view if you do sit on the right. Enjoy! The problem was with a tunnel that would be used on the return journey by road from the extended rail trip, called Norway in a nutshell on our cruise. The accident was serious, involving many vehicles, and some people died I believe. It was announced in the early evening on our ship, the day before we arrived at Flaam, as they were getting details in about the accident. As a result the tunnel was to be closed for a week for structural work. A total of 450 passengers had booked trips on the ship we were on, that would be affected, and as far as I know we were all offered the shorter rail trip (up and straight back down). We took this, obviously we hadn't originally booked for a return rail trip down, as we should have changed trains at the top, and then changed to a coach. Theoretically the problems would be for available seats for the journey back down. We actually went up about 9am, but I know some people were disappointed as their train broke down later that morning, which was a separate issue all together. What they didn't realise was that due to rain we didn't see anything anyway, except at the waterfall. I think with two cruise ships in, and then the breakdown of the mid morning train, it was difficult to manage the situation. I can believe a lot of work went on to try and sort something out at such short notice. We were also told that the day of the accident that people who had been on coaches on the other side of the tunnel couldn't get back to their ship, so I don't know what ship that was, or how they caught up with the ship. CRUISIN LINDA Posted August 29, 2013 #7 Share Posted August 29, 2013 Hi Sweby, Was it the Crown Princess that was in with you? We are doing the same itinerary on Sunday. We have booked 3 groups of 10 via the roll calls and we read in a blog that on the last trip, the ship left Flam early as they had to pick up people who had gone on a boat trip and couldn't get back by coach through the tunnel, so had to be picked up from a place call Vik (I think:) ) Our concern was that our railway trip doesn't get back until 3.40pm and the last time the ship left at 4pm - a bit tight
