SpongeBob1996 Posted August 29, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 29, 2013 Hello, We are staying for an extra night after our Rome - Monte Carlo Cruise on Mariner. Would appreciate opinions on whether we should stay in Nice or Monte Carlo. Thanks!
ChatKat in Ca. Posted August 29, 2013 #2 Share Posted August 29, 2013 We have stayed in both places. Nice is closer to the Airport, the Flower Market is lovely with sidewalk cafes as is the Promenade and about half the cost to Monte Carlo;
TedC Posted August 29, 2013 #3 Share Posted August 29, 2013 Nice is NICE - Chagall and Mattisee museums are just north of Nice - Rick Steves tour book on France tells how easily you can get there by bus or taxi - bus is cheaper. The beach at Nice is small stones - not much sand - but sill nice in warm weather. Lots of topless bathers when I was there in 1954 - of course I averted my young eyes! orchestrapal Posted August 29, 2013 #5 Share Posted August 29, 2013 Agree Nice! Beautiful old town, places to walk, museums and food. Older and more charming and cheaper than Monte Carlo.
OrpingtonT Posted August 29, 2013 #6 Share Posted August 29, 2013 Both are fine. If you are a Formula 1 fan you will be in awe of Monte Carlo. However Nice is lovely with reasonable prices, good hotels and interesting walks.
Joanandjoe Posted August 29, 2013 #7 Share Posted August 29, 2013 It depends on what you like, so do some research. We don't gamble, and we love art and museums. For us, Nice was therefore nicer, and easier for out of town excursions such as Eze or St. Paul de Vence. We also loved the flower market, the promenade, the old city (which is more Italian than French), the hill (Simiez?)with the Matisse and Picasso museums and Roman ruins in front of Matisse, and the archaeological museum known as Terra Amata. However, Monaco was lovely, very hilly, and very expensive. For just one night, which is really much too short a time, either place will do just fine. We should add that Monaco will always have a special place in our hearts. We got there 9 days after super storm Sandy, after being without power until less than 24 hours before we left home (one day early due to another impending storm). The Hotel Marriott La Porte de Monaco, 50 yards inside France, got us a room a day earlier than our reservations, showed us a relatively inexpensive place to eat, and was generally accommodating. We loved Monaco and found that, with the hills, gardens, and museums, it felt much larger than its tiny size. Nice was even better on a prior trip; but both are great. TedC Posted August 29, 2013 #8 Share Posted August 29, 2013 Where is Picasso museum? I thought it was in Malaga, Spain.
OrpingtonT Posted August 30, 2013 #9 Share Posted August 30, 2013 Where is Picasso museum? I thought it was in Malaga, Spain. Ted, 164 Avenue des Arènes de Cimiez, 06000 Nice, France. (Though a larger one is in Barcelona as you say.)
Wendy The Wanderer Posted August 30, 2013 #10 Share Posted August 30, 2013 Where is Picasso museum? I thought it was in Malaga, Spain. Remember, Picasso got around, and was very prolific.
wripro Posted August 30, 2013 #11 Share Posted August 30, 2013 Definitely Nice if you can choose only one, Monaco is Disneyland for the rich, worth seeing but not at the expense of missing a great city like Nice.
Joanandjoe Posted August 30, 2013 #12 Share Posted August 30, 2013 Where is Picasso museum? I thought it was in Malaga, Spain. Actually, we were thinking on the Chagall Museum on Cimiez Hill; but there also is a Picasso museum.
TedC Posted August 30, 2013 #13 Share Posted August 30, 2013 That's what I assumed. Chagall is buried in a small cemetery at St. Paul de Vence that overlooks the valley. Matisse and his wife are buried at a monastery near his museum.
wripro Posted August 31, 2013 #14 Share Posted August 31, 2013 JoanandJoe, There are Picasso Museums all over the world, Paris, Barcelona, Malaga to name a few.
Threechicks Posted August 31, 2013 #15 Share Posted August 31, 2013 Nice is wonderful. I would love to go back for at least a week. Try to get into the Negresco Hotel whether you are staying there or not. It is unique. A combination of museum and quirky art gallery.
Joanandjoe Posted September 1, 2013 #16 Share Posted September 1, 2013 Chagall lived to almost 100 - there are always stones on top of his tomb. I guess I take it on faith Chagall is in his tomb. It's a traditional Jewish custom to place stones on a grave of a loved one when you visit a cemetery. We stretched tradition a bit when we placed stones on Chagall's grave when we visited St. Paul de Vence.
TedC Posted September 2, 2013 #17 Share Posted September 2, 2013 I always thought tradition of stones on grave made a lot of sense! Stones are immortal but flowers aren't, alas we are.
Longhorn1 Posted September 4, 2013 #18 Share Posted September 4, 2013 How long is the taxi ride from Monte Carlo to Nice? Thanks!
TedC Posted September 4, 2013 #19 Share Posted September 4, 2013 Train between MC and Nice was about 30 minutes - cab probably would be similar time, depending where in Nice you wanted to go. We went from RR station to RR station then took bus to near Chagall and Matisse museums and took train back to MC
