We excuse ourselves just after the dessert orders are taken. We rarely eat them either. And we leave with a "Enjoy your desserts and the rest of your evening, see you tomorrow night or around the ship"
okgirl Posted August 30, 2013 #5 Share Posted August 30, 2013 If you are just at a table of others then excuse yourself. If your with family only you know what's best.;) Isn't that the truth......we grew up grilling hamburgers with the family next door every Saturday night........very casual, but it bugs the dirt out of my brother to have people leave the table before he has finished his meal. So now we all sit around and chit chat until he's finished.

The only thing I'll add to the already great answers :D is...sometimes we end up liking our tablemates so much they have to push us out of the dining room :p so don't feel like since you are not partaking in desert that you can't just sit there and enjoy the company :)

okgirl Posted August 30, 2013 #10 Share Posted August 30, 2013 The only thing I'll add to the already great answers :D is...sometimes we end up liking our tablemates so much they have to push us out of the dining room :p so don't feel like since you are not partaking in desert that you can't just sit there and enjoy the company :) We've done that too........it really just depends on if there is something we want to get to. But lately, we've actually opted for YTD, and get a table for 2.......I eat in the open seating MDR for breakfast and lunch, my sister eats in the buffet, so I excuse myself at what ever point of the meal I feel the need to. BananaAnna Posted August 30, 2013 #11 Share Posted August 30, 2013 if I sense tablemates are finished but waiting for me/us I'll say 'please don't let me hold you up.... I tend to dawdle sometimes' in my best little old lady voice.
golfadj Posted August 31, 2013 #12 Share Posted August 31, 2013 We like to go to the family comedy show at 7 30. Generally no time for dessert so we will excuse ourselves and say where we are going and see you around the ship.
drakes2 Posted August 31, 2013 #13 Share Posted August 31, 2013 Not only did we end up liking our tablemates but we went to some shows with them, and had pre dinner drinks one night on their balcony. We still keep in touch via e mail as we live in Canada and they in Florida. frugalKansan Posted August 31, 2013 #16 Share Posted August 31, 2013 I disagree to an extent. Just leaving the table for no good reason is not very polite. If for some reason I do need to leave before others are done, I explain my reason and ask to be excused. There's a reason your parents teach you to ask to be excused instead of just being presumptions Carnival Destiny jan 2010 Carnival Liberty 9/28/13 Carnival Victory 10/5/

You have no obligation to wait for them to finish their meal or to not sit down before they show up. As others have said, if it's family or friends I would wait. Strangers, no. cynthe66 Posted August 31, 2013 #18 Share Posted August 31, 2013 I'd say excuse me but I don't feel I owe complete strangers and explanation of why I'm leaving in this situation. At someones house, your house, a restraunt or dinner party then yes but on a ship where you have no obligations to the strangers I say no. A simple "Excuse me but I'm off for the evening, see you around."
Elustriah Posted August 31, 2013 #19 Share Posted August 31, 2013 our our last cruise (and first one :) I always had wine with my dinner and took my time and had desert! kangaand2roos Posted August 31, 2013 #21 Share Posted August 31, 2013 Like most other posters, I would say no obligation to stay, but good manners to politely excuse yourself. When in doubt, the Golden Rule will usually give you the correct answer!

You were lucky. We only had one cruise where we weren't seated with family or friends and they weren't matched to us at all. We had absolutely nothing in common with them. Two were elderly sisters, four were three young girls and their sugar daddy. The whole meals were uncomfortable to say the least. We couldn't wait for the meals to be over. elliair Posted August 31, 2013 #24 Share Posted August 31, 2013 Another reason why we have any time dining and a table for 2. No worries of offending any one.:p P.S. On one cruise we were seated with another couple who couldn't speak English. The woman in very poor English asked "how you get here?" "What do you mean, how did we get here? "How you pay for trip?" I told her we were janitors and we collected soda cans throughout the year and cashed them in which paid for the trip. I got up and asked to be moved. dougandmo Posted August 31, 2013 #25 Share Posted August 31, 2013 I've only been seated with non-family twice. The first time was our honeymoon and we were matched up with another honeymoon couple. Nothing in common (we're pretty conservative, the other guy walked in for his wedding to Jesus Walks by Kanye West), but we enjoyed it and got along well. If either couple had to leave early it was no big deal. The other time it was a complete mismatch and was somewhat awkward. Our last two cruises we've got tables for 2 through no effort on our part. It's been nice. I wouldn't feel bad about politely excusing myself if we needed to go to get to a show on time or something like that. I'd be polite about it though.
