Amalfi or Positano from Salerno

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

We are docking in Salerno on Wed. Oct. 2nd. We are there from 7-6:30. I am looking at taking the ferry along the coast and going to Amalfi, have lunch and look around and then taking the Sita bus to Ravello. I have a couple of questions in regards to this.

Would I be missing something great if we went to Amalfi and not Positano?

Rather than taking the bus and then the ferry back from Ravello to Amalfi to Salerno could one get a taxi from Ravello to Salerno? Cost and time?

Where would be the best place to eat with an amazing view?

Thanks so much for all your help and if you have a suggestion that we have not thought of please feel free to pass them along.

Trish

Hi Trish,

My wife and I are on the QE arriving in Salerno a little later on the 17th October and are looking to do something similar so we are keen to see what responses you get to your post. By all accounts I do believe that Positano must be included in our excursion and will probably be doing the tour by road. I contacted Sarah at AP Tours (info@aptours.it) and she can arrange a nice road tour. I am just waiting to find others that would like to join up to reduce the cost. I suggest you email Sarah to see what she can offer you.

Regards Malcolm.

Thanks Malcolm,

I hope that you get some feedback as I am not receiving any. It will be a wonderful trip no matter what so I will probably just wing it and do our own thing. I am thinking we will take the ferry to Amalfi, the bus to Ravello and back to Amalfi and then the ferry back. I still have a few weeks to sort it out.

Sorry you didn't get a response earlier, I missed your post.

Getting from Salerno to Amalfi by ferry won't be difficult, the problem is the return.

There are two ferry companies that run this route but they use different docks. Alicost uses Molo Manfredi, which is closer to where cruise ships dock. There are two morning departures that will work for you, at 8 and 8:40 AM. The issue is the return, as the earliest is too late for you, arriving at 6:50 PM. Current schedule here: http://www.alicost.it/content/?id=6

You have two alternatives. You can come back on Sant'Andrea to the Concordia dock and then take a short taxi ride back to your ship, or you could take the bus back from Amalfi. Either will work.

Sant'Andrea has a departure from Amalfi at 4:15 PM (the trip takes about an hour): http://www.coopsantandrea.com/it/servizidilinea/servizi_b.asp?id=2

BIG CAVEAT: Keep checking the schedules, as they will switch to fall/winter soon and may be different when you arrive.

Given a choice between Amalfi and Positano, you would want to put Positano far at the top of your list. In terms of places to visit, we would score Positano, Ravello, and then Amalfi (in that order) with Amalfi at the bottom of the list. Amalfi is a very small town that you can walk through in 30 min. Postano and Ravello are both amazing destinations (and great towns to stay in) not to be missed. Ravello is not talked about as much because it is a little out of the way (its not on the Amalfi Drive) and on top of a mountain that overlooks the coast. Ravello is accessible via a bus that leaves about every 45 -60 min from the main Square at Amalfi.
