Hurricane Dennis

Recommended Posts

Witout knowing the 19 year old in question it's hard to say for sure, but 19 year olds are pretty much adults in my book. The ones that don't go to college are presumably employed and perhaps living on their own, the same as 29, 39, or 69 year olds. And the ones that do go to college are likely pretty sharp, that's how they got into college in the first place.

Sure, they have less practical life experience than older folks so their decision making might not be as good, and you're going to worry about them because they are your kids, but overall I don't see them as being much more at risk than anyone else in a hurricane.

I'm not questioning the intelligence of the 19yo. I don't know if you've ever been through a cat 3 or better but if you have you would know that age and intelligence goes out the window once it's on you. There's been alot of 50 and 60 years olds die because they made bonehead decisions during a hurricane. If in doubt it's best to run away. I'll stay up to about a weak cat 3 but if it's more than that I'd rather run away and watch it on TV and go back home later and see whats left. The 19yo may be very intelligent indeed but during a hurricane it's best to be with a group than out in it on your own. There truly is safety in numbers. And it's not usually the wind that will do you in. It's the storm surge (much like a trunami) or a tornado that will kill you. And if it hits Mobile look for the terminal to be under water from the storm surge. Could be anywhere from 4 to 16 feet in a cat 3 or better.

Peg, you are going to love this ship! It is the most beautiful ship in the fleet! We just got off her 2 weeks ago and still talking about it!

Have a great time, and don't worry about the weather! Please do me a favor... Go to the Casino and look for Eva the casino host and tell her "Dave and Joanne said hello" She is the greatest!

Thanks for the advice!! I am trying not to worry to much!:o And yes, I will tell Eva you said hello! I have written down your names so I do not forget!!! Thanks again & I will keep the faith!!

I'm leaving on the 14th out of Orlando on the Fantasy. I live in New Orleans, and have a flight booked from here. Will this affect the cruise? I'll walk to Orlando if I need to, I'm DEFINATELY getting on that ship....I need a vacation!

We're (5 of us) booked on Conquest out of NOLA this Sunday *gulp*. Assuming we make it to New Orleans, do you think it will be a problem to get an extra night or two in our hotel in case embarkation is delayed?

I'm not fretting for real yet. I'll wait until at least Friday to do that, and we'll know more by then, too. :)

Cheers,

Friday

This is why I rarely cruise during hurricane season - I don't need the stress and anxiety. Also, this is another great reason to buy cruise (trip) insurance (especially not through the cruise line!)

I hope everyone gets to their ports of embarkation/debarkation on time and all is well with their cruises......but please remember than any itinerary changes are for the safety of all concerned. Last year some (yes very few) passengers were taking it almost as a person insult that the cruise line changed itineraries, etc. That is the risk of cruising during hurricane season. And that is why it is usually cheaper this time of year to cruise the Caribbean.

Good luck everyone!

Will rip threw the gulf and pan handle, maybe cuba will slow it down a bit but Jamaica is going to suffer somewhat and get hit right on ---Orlando seems safe this weekend but tampa and N Orleans could cause delays or cancellations and or evacuations---Buy stock in home depot and loews big sales in ply wood and we are just getting started good luck to all!!!!!:o

you're planning on three great ports and you get Nassau and Freeport? The armpits of the Caribbean? My cruise isn't until later this month, thank goodness

Just get me on a ship and I'll be happy.

I will be staying in the "armpit of the Caribbean" on Cable beach from the 20th to the 25th, and will be daydreaming watching the ships pull in and out of the port.:(

Thanks! She will smile and probably ask how you know us. Have fun with her!

Enjoy your cruise, I wish I was still on her.

BEAUTIFUL day in Belize... GLASS SMOOTH water

I can't imagine us getting back to Tampa by Sunday (getting back through the Gulf on SATURDAY  )

No official word yet - but a CCL staff person (somewhat "in the know") did indicate that we may wait it out in Cozumel (extra day or so) - but that the final decision had not yet been made.. (they said... "you did not hear it from ME" - I said... "hear what?")

If you're scheduled to go to New orleans, you'll probably be all right since the track has been trending eastward. However, watch the track, and don't go if it looks to be heading that way. New Orleans is probably the absolute worst US city in which to ride out a hurricane. If the path moves back west, they'll be evacuating the city.

There may be a chance that Carnival can take the Miracle into the Port of Miami or Port Everglades... Any alternate is better than nothing.

To anyone sailing this weekend... Keep your cool and try to make the best of whatever will be. Remember it is beyond the Cruise Lines' control...

Dennis has a big "wobble" in it. Yesterday it looked like it would hit Jamaica dead center and today even though the island is getting hit...it's not right under the eye as it went north...and now they are saying it is moving more NW instead of WNW...I don't think they really know for sure what it's gonna do as they depend on computer models, which can be wrong as well occasionally...looks as though it will affect some cruises and not so much others...good luck to all of you scheduled for this weekend...I hope your embarkation and departure are "uneventful" in terms of bad happenings!

Local stations are telling us in New Orleans Friday night and especially Saturday will be our big decision day for evacuation. Unless the track changes much I'm sure they'll be wanting alot of us to evacuate Saturday. As far as the Conquest, we are on it on Sunday the 10th also. It's not looking too good for the Conquest to come back up the river until after Dennis blows by, probably Mon. or Tues.

Ronath, we're supposed to be on the conquest on the 10th. We are scheduled to fly down there tomorrow afternoon from nashville. We didn't get travel insurance which i guess we should have now. do you have a suggestion as to what you would do in our situation? i guess my main worry is what happens if we get down there and then there is an evacuation? I guess we would just go back to the airport? right now our plan is to just go ahead and fly down there and whatever happens ... happens.

thanks

What day do they expect the Miracle to get back. I am suppose to head down to Tampa for the 10 July sailing. If the ship is not going to be there until Monday or Tuesday there is no sense sitting in a hotel for 2-3 days..

When do they usually make the decision when it comes to something like this, CCL knows the storm is out there and they also know where there ships are Time for them to make an OFFICIAL decision.

dsb1122 - Have you called the hotel yet? If it was me I would call them first. There have been instances in the past when locals have booked hotel rooms as a refuge, so they may stay open but I really don't know. The past few years the authorities have been more worried about evacuation because of the fear of the "big one". But the track of this hurricane is showing of hitting to our east in MS. or AL, maybe even the panhandle of FL but it's really too early to tell. I'm just thinking this hurricane may come just close enough to keep the Conquest from coming in on Sunday morning. If that's the case we may not be boarding until late Monday or Tuesday.

Anybody else besides Tom-n-Cheryl from the Miracle on here? Carnival still not saying anything. Please let us know when they tell you how and when you're getting back to Tampa. Thanks so much Tom-n-Cheryl.

I am on the Conquest on the July 17th...

If the July 10th sailing does not set sail until later in the week, say Mon or Tues rather than Sun...

What does that do to my sailing on the next Sun?

Will the Conquest July 10th sailing be cut short, or will it still sail 7 days full days even leaving later in the week and cut into the July 17th sailing?

Does travel insurance pay when it is a hurricane? I have the insurance, not thru CCL though!! I guess I better read my policy!

If the July 10 sailing leaves late, they will just have a short cruise. That's usually how it's done. :) That way only one set of pax is disrupted instead of two. Unfortunately, *I'M* one of the July 10 pax. LOL

My folks are flying to NOLA tomorrow, and we're supposed to fly in on Saturday. Not quiet sure how it will all work out yet, but we're hoping we'll be able to stay at our hotel an extra night or two until the ship comes in. At this point, we are figuring that Conquest will not be able to return on time. (Note - this is speculation on our part, not the result of official knowledge) We haven't changed our travel plans yet, though we're thinking about what we'll do instead if the worst happens (cancellation).

Cheers,

Friday

Hey Friday!

We are leaving in the morning to drive to NOLA for the July 10th cruise. Have to say I'll be a little disappointed if our cruise is cut short, but we will make do in New Orleans. Talked to a carnival rep about an hour ago. He said to call them on Saturday to get the changes if any. 1-888-CARNIVAL. You guys be careful flying in and either way, we are going to have a blast on this cruise!;)

Sailing soon (I hope),

Casey

It sounds like we are generally in agreement then. It's a person that is potentially in the way of a hurricane and has to take the appropriate precautions. The fact that the person is 19 really has little bearing on the issue.
