Getting to Barcelona Aiport from Celebrity Equinox

Hello Everyone,

We are going to be cruising Nov1st on the Celebrity Equinox out of Barcelona. We have a flight home on the 13th (day ship get to port) at 10:00 AM. We didn't have a choice because we are using frequent flyer miles. I have heard two trains of thought:

1. Do self-disembarkation and take the Celebrity Shuttle to the airport

2. Do self-disembarkation and take a taxi as there are plenty of them.

My question is has anyone sailed on this ship, gotten back to port, able to get off early enough to get a taxi for a 10:00 flight. Or should I purchase celebrity shuttle tickets which are way more than a taxi. I was assured by Celebrity that I had enough time but if I took their shuttle it would be guaranteed that I would get to the airport on time. Now I am not sure if that is true or they are just trying to make some money off of me.

Every cruise I have taken when we disembarked there were tons of taxis waiting so there never was a question of how long to wait. They practically threw you in a cab. BUT. I have never disembarked from Barcelona and just wanted to hear from someone how their experience went.

Thanks in advance for answering,

Lynne:)

We are leaving on the Equinox on Sept. 11 returning on Sept. 26. We have a 10:45 flight. One of the people I met on the Roll Call set up a private taxi back to the airport. We are carrying off our luggage and will meet this private driver at 7:15. I have also heard that there is a rush for taxi's. I don't want to do Celebrity transfer as you never know how many other's are going and you have to wait for the slowest person. Check our private taxi's and go to your roll call to get other people with you. Our van holds 7 people and the cost is 90 euros split 3 ways. It was a no brainer for us to do this.

We did self disembark in may from an ncl ship. We left at 7.30 and got to the airport before 8. Our flight was at 10.45 so we had lots of time but would have made a 10am flight too although there is lots of walking in Barcelona airport. Self disembark was so easy and there were lots of taxis there. I can only assume it would be that easy from any other ship.

We took the Celebrity shuttle b/c we had a lot of OBC. You don't have to lug your suitcases around in the morning either. We flew on Delta, so after we went thru customs at the pier they checked our luggage and printed our boarding passes before we got on the bus for the airport. I think this is done just for the

Delta flights, but it didn't look like there were any hold ups for people bringing bags to the buses themselves. Our flight left at 10:30 AM and we had plenty of time.

Good luck and enjoy your cruise.

We disembarked from Equinox on 2nd Sept.

Our flight wasn't until 1310 so had plenty time. Said to meet at 0840 we wnt to meeting point at 0820 and they were already disembarking our group. Baggage reclaim was a little chaotic.

We booked a transfer via CruisingExcursions.com and were met by a taxi driver holding a sign with our name, who took us direct to airport. Off ship at 0820 bags, taxi ride to airport and we were in check in queue by 0855 on a Monday morning.

Just to add to 4774Papa's post, if anyone reading this is in no hurry, we meandered out around the last possible time to disembark--whoa! the taxi line was loooooooong. Had we been going to the airport, I would've kicked myself for not pre-arranging a car service. (As it was, I was bummed to see a public bus labeled Las Ramblas come through just as we made it to the front of the line--we were self-carry and could have easily checked the bus schedule and timed our exit to take the quick and cheap ride to Las Ramblas, which was our destination. It is not far from the port, but too far to walk in the heat with luggage.)

We haven't been to Barcelona for a couple of years, so things might be different now, but when we were there the bus that went to the ramblas was just a "port bus". There was one every 5 minutes or so.

Gosh, you'll be boarding as I'm getting off !

I sailed last year from Barcelona too, and our flight home was for just before 11am from Barcelona airport. We were off the ship just before 8am, our bags were on the luggage carousel immediately, we walked straight outside - taxi's were lined up (& a man in charge just checked how many of us & how many suitcases & put us in a cab). It was still dark outside, drizzling rain & lots of traffic going to work.

Our taxi driver drove like a race-car driver & we were in the airport terminal before 8.30am. The check-in desk wasn't even open!.

And it only cost €30 ( 3 of us & suitcases).

We have gotten on in Barcelona a few times. We generally don't book a flight that early, if there is only a early flight then stay overnight is our rule. Regardless, the airport is not far away, I recommend you get off the ship first in the am, walking off with your luggage and get a taxi to the airport vs waste time with the ship shuttle. We always do a taxi to the airport.

As much as I truly hate self disembarkation I don't see that you have a choice. Be prepared to get pushed and shoved as you exit the ship. Either a car service or taxi will work. Eliminate the Celebrity shuttle altogether.

Do check in online at the 24 hour mark and pay any baggage fees if you have them. This will save a few minutes.

The Delta gates are quite a distance from the check in but BCN is not JFK or ATL or CDG. The terminal is clearly marked and once checked in you will not have a problem.

Perhaps there is a group in your Roll Call who has room for you in an airport transfer with a private car service. And, if you haven't joined the Roll Call or signed up for the Meet and Mingle, please do so.

Have a wonderful cruise.
