Emerald Mini-Suite Balcony (Dolphin Deck)

Recommended Posts

Hi:

This is our first Princess Cruise in a Mini-Suite. We like the extra cabin space and the large balcony, and we are in the aft area.

We also know that the Dolphin Deck balcony is uncovered, which for us is not expected to be an issue. Our cruise companions elected to go down a deck for the shade, but we declined the move as we like to have a "buffer" between us and the nightclub or any public room.

Aside from the less-privacy-from-above aspect, we are guessing that there are other pros and cons; hoping for some positive reinforcement, but if we've made a bad choice, it would also be good to know.

Thanks for your help, Ned

I generally book aft-ish minis on either Dolphin or Emerald deck. The open exposure doesn't bother me. People shouting back and forth or addressing me when I'm minding my own business does. This would be irritating regardless of deck. I especially enjoy the easy access to the traditional dining room, horizon court, and aft Promenade deck from this location. I think you will enjoy!

You mean like "How's the weather down there"??? :D

Appreciate everyone's responses!

Thanks, Ned

We too have a mini on the Dolphin deck because we wanted a bit more space for our ten day cruise. Doesn't bother me if people want to look at me from above... (I'll probably ignore anyone shouting at me..maybe they'll take the hint)... We are just forward of mid ship and I picked this location because we don't have to go far in either direction to reach the forward or mid elevators.

I have sailed twice in a Dolphin deck mini. I never noticed anyone looking at me. But, I wasn't really looking around to see if they were. A couple of things I loved about the Dolphin mini were: at night we could go out on our balcony and enjoy the beautiful, evening sky. It was great to just be able to look up and see the full sky not blocked by any overhangs, etc. The other think we liked was that you didn't have balconies below you so when we were sitting on the balcony all we saw in front of us was ocean.

I agree with every word of this. If you listen to some folks, you would swear that each day in the Patter, there is a specific time set aside for the following activity:

9:00am-10:00am: Intrusive Staring. Come join your Cruise Director Staff on the Sun Deck for an hour of entertaining staring down at the Dolphin Deck balconies below. See what your other shipmates are up to out on their decks! (In case of inclement weather, this activity may be moved indoors to a series of partially covered Caribe Deck balcony.)

It just doesn't happen. People on Dolphin Deck stand out at their rail and look at the sea. So do people on Caribe Deck. They can be seen too, if they are at the rail. No one cares. Unless you are cooking meth on your balcony (which is prohibited under the current "no smoking" rules), are you ever doing anything on your balcony that would be the talk of the ship? If so, then maybe I am booking the wrong cruises! Protection from the sun? Sure. I get it. Perfectly legitimate reason for not wanting an uncovered balcony. But this whole "privacy" thing is silly, and should never be given a moment's thought.

For us, the unobstructed view of the evening sky and the open air vistas are reason enough to book an uncovered balcony. As is the cantilevered effect of being straight out over the water. When I need shade, I bring wide brimmed hat.

Never bothered by the "open sky". Never had any intrusions. As a matter of fact, we have made many friends (seriously) looking up from the dolphin deck and speaking to other cruisers. Yes, sometimes they started the conversation, sometimes we did. We have booked an Emerald deck Mini for Hawaii so we shall see if we like a covered balcony or not.

Thank you Thank you Thank you to all who have posted on this thread... you have taken away any bit of worry I had about my Dolphin Mini!!

You are going to love the Dolphin mini suits,so much elbow room, storage and a bathroom that does not squeeze you in a shower built for a small child.:D We have been on 27 Princess cruises and have booked mini's 90% of the time. Lately had to change to the covered mini's on Emerald deck, just getting to mature to get "roasted" on our trips to Hawaii. If you ever decide to book a covered mini on E deck I would recomend the starboard side (uneven numbers) since the bandstand in the vista is underneath the aft port side. Have a great time and enjoy your cabin choice:)

Our experience was mainly positive-but for cruisers throwing food to birds and that food landed on us. People yelling not at us but other passengers and when balcony above was cleaned the soapy water landing on our balcony. I would still think about it if the price was right and weather conditions.

Here are some pictures of Emerald mini and balcony. We have been in quite a few mini s on different princess ships, and they all look about the same.

You will enjoy it.

If I read your first post correctly, you said something about an Emerald mini on the Dolphin deck. Emerald is its own deck below Dolphin deck.

We often have the Dolphin deck minis and we have yet to have a problem, but we are an older couple, so maybe it isn't a bother to us. ;) If we see others above looking down, we just wave. They wave back and move on.

I think it is a terrible design flaw with that class of Princess ships, but they built subsequent ships after the Grand with the minis on Dolphin. Oh well, guess they didn't listen to the passengers.

They could have put up some cover once they realised most passengers did not like them. We had a verandah on a Celebrity ship that was built uncovered but that had a sturdy thick canvas 'roof' added after they realised the problem. It was fine, in fact really quite nice.

What is the basis for your assertion that "most people did not like them" and that the current situation constitutes a "problem"? The posts on this thread would seem to confirm that the open sky balconies are favored by many.
