cruisinsoooon Posted September 9, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 9, 2013 Booked a tour to the Cliff Walk and Breakers, but the more I read, I'm wondering if it is better to do this on our own. Is it a long walk from the ship to the Cliff Walk? On the other hand do we have a better (and quicker) chance of getting into the Breakers on a tour vs. doing it ourselves, and walking the Cliff Walk on our own too? Also would like to take the guided tour at Fort Adams. This is our first visit to Newport, and I would sure appreciate any advice on how to do all this from those who have done it before! Thanks! Rare 1025cruise Posted September 9, 2013 #2 Share Posted September 9, 2013 You will definitely want transportation from the tender dock to the cliff walk, the mansions, etc. With regards to the Cliff Walk, there are still sections that are closed due to the storm last year. SailBadtheSinner Posted September 9, 2013 #3 Share Posted September 9, 2013 The distance from the tender dock to the Breakers and Cliff Walk is about 2.0 miles. If you are a daily walker the distance won't be a problem. An option would be to take a city bus (route #67) to the Breakers which has a bus stop in front of it. A portion of Cliff Walk is directly behind the Breakers and is the eastern border of the Breaker's property. Cliff Walk was damaged from Hurricane Sandy and the southern ⅔'s of the walk is closed, but you can still walk on the portion from the Breakers north to the start on Memorial Ave. Walking on CW is not a problem, and having a tour book (or the such) would be helpful. The benefit for a tour group at the Breakers is that the tour group will have priority over walk up visitors; but if you can get an early start, you may be able to beat the excursions. As for Fort Adams, were you thinking of doing a cruise ship excursion? FYI, the Breakers/Cliff Walk are on the east side of the island and Fort Adams is on the west side. In fact, FA will be on your starboard is as you approach the anchorage and will be clearly visible from the cruise ship while anchored. Tours of FA are offered, from the FA's FAQ's. When is your visit and what cruise ship are you on? SBtS
laughing husky Posted September 11, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 11, 2013 will there be cabs at the dock to take people to one of the mansions....? and how much is a taxi?
SailBadtheSinner Posted September 11, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 11, 2013 will there be cabs at the dock to take people to one of the mansions....? and how much is a taxi? Since the area close to the tender dock is small and becomes quickly congested with tour buses, your best bet is to walk 1 block north to the Newport transportation center where you'll find buses, taxis, and info. The taxi fare to the Breakers would be about $7.00 for 2 passengers plus $1.00 each for passengers beyond 2. There is a city bus stop in front of the Breakers and nearby to other mansions. trophy_23 Posted September 11, 2013 #6 Share Posted September 11, 2013 We found the bus really handy and cheap the couple times we were there. Gave us the chance to stop at the Tennis Hall of Fame also which was neat.
