tinykygal Posted September 9, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 9, 2013 This site has been invaluable to this "about to cruise again" poster. I am confused because I read gratuities, $11+ per day, per person, are added to the room charges. We did not have to do this with RCCL or NCL. Is this something new? I also read that it could be adjusted at the service desk. Would you mind explaining this to me in detail? I am accustomed to doing the envelope tip thing and I assume that is now outdated. How do YOU posters handle this? One of the awesome posters on our Legend Nov 17 roll-call said she had already paid her gratuities. Not sure what to do. The more I can pay in advance, the better for me. Help this cruiser out! Thank you so much.

asalligo Posted September 9, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 9, 2013 You have stepped into a hot topic here. I am sure this thread will get interesting. Carnival charges 11.50 per person, per day and this fee will be automatically charged to your account and most likely appear on the last evening of the cruise. These are not required charges though and you have the option to remove them entirely, modify them to a lower rate or even add to them. If you prefer you can pay in cash. Carnival also allows the prepayment of these tips before you leave so that they do not appear while cruising. Many prefer to take advantage of that option. Thank you so much. On RCCL, if you want to charge the tips to your account, you have to fill out a form and submit it at least 2 days before the end of your cruise. Otherwise, you put your tips in an envelop and hand them out. Carnival cruisers seem to have a problem paying tips based on reading these boards, so they take it from you automatically. But you have the ability to adjust them at any time, or any reason.

Tinykygal - Call carnival, have your booking number and credit card ready and pre-pay. Hardest part is the on-hold wait which can be very short....or a little long. Otherwise it's simple and many cruisers do this to take care of that cost prior to cruising.

Dont think you can adjust when you prepay.
soccersharon Posted September 9, 2013 #11 Share Posted September 9, 2013 We always pre-pay our tips - and tip extra for outstanding service, both in the MDR and our room steward :)
fuddrules Posted September 9, 2013 #12 Share Posted September 9, 2013 Dont think you can adjust when you prepay. That's a good point and I never considered this. Perhaps you could get an S&S credit? In any event, I've never had service so bad I'd want to adjust. I generally take some action before I get that angry. At a typical restaurant, I've gone back in the worker area and refilled my own drink when they weren't doing it and I couldn't find my server to do it. You get some strange looks but I get my refill. I suppose in the MDR as an example, if I had empty plates sitting around for a long time with no server in site, I'd probably collect them all and set them on a clean table. They may not be too happy but I'd get a point across.

tinykygal Posted September 9, 2013 Author #18 Share Posted September 9, 2013 Well, I spent hours trying to find out what is the norm, if there is any such thing on the gratuities. It has changed and it has been several years since we cruised. I have never been pre-charged @ any time for the "tips" and I found this confusing. I read the fine print that said these amounts "could be adjusted if requested" at the service desk (realizing it is not called that). I had not planned on stirring up anything but your comments are very educational. I am not sure I am clear on what to do, so please...if you can be civil, keep those suggestions coming. I really need to know. Love these Boards!
bnukem Posted September 9, 2013 #19 Share Posted September 9, 2013 We always just let them get added on to our S&S account. Would prepay them at booking if we have the extra money at the time. Once onboard though, we do give extra cash tips to anyone going above normal to make our cruise special. Also always make sure we have some extra cash for anytime we order room service.
