Island_Chica Posted September 11, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 11, 2013 Hi All! Sailing Valor's Southern Caribbean route this winter. We currently have the coveted Grand Scenic OV cabin (9200) booked. Our party is four - my husband and I, and our 2 and 4 year old sons. The Grand Scenic OV is 320 Sq. Ft., no balcony but those great, great floor to ceiling windows. With the sale running, we can get into an Ocean Suite for <$1000 more. OS appears to be 275 sq ft with a balcony of 65 sq ft, so we lose some indoor space, but do gain a bathtub and balcony. What would you do? Waiting for my agent to call back to get exact cost difference.
SoCalCruiser20 Posted September 11, 2013 #2 Share Posted September 11, 2013 I am currently booked in 9201 on the Valor which is the same as 9200 just on the right side of ship. As I have yet to cruise in this room I can only imagine how great it is going to be. If you have never had a forward facing room with floor to ceiling windows before I would give it a shot. I took this room over any other balcony on board. IMO I would stay in 9200 due to the views you will have while enjoying your room and extra space. Good luck on your choice and have a great cruise
Island_Chica Posted September 11, 2013 Author #3 Share Posted September 11, 2013 Thanks SoCalCruiser. I want to stay in 9200, husband is leaning towards OS. The difference works out to $1100 more for an OS. From Atlanta, our airfare for 4 to SJU runs about $1400, so I told him that staying in our original room will almost pay for our airfare! Plus, I think the kids will love the big picture windows and the switch-controlled blinds.
jmcancruise Posted September 11, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 11, 2013 Am currently on the valor in a Lido balcony. Last week we were in 9201 and loved it. Views were amazing. It rained a couple of days and it just felt like we were at the cottage with the rain on the window. I would not pay the extra.
kneedeep1964 Posted September 11, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 11, 2013 I would try the scenic ocean view. the larger cabin would give the boys some more 'breathing room'.. and you as well. For the price difference of airfare, I would stay where you were, too.
Island_Chica Posted September 11, 2013 Author #6 Share Posted September 11, 2013 Thanks jmcancruise. I will show your post to my husband. Those rooms look incredible. In fact, I booked a year out just to secure that cabin!
goofytoo Posted September 11, 2013 #7 Share Posted September 11, 2013 I am so jealous!! I sailed in a scenic ocean view on Liberty on the Spa deck, when they had them and I sailed in a grand suite on the Valor. I would take room 9200 in a heart beat. The views in that room are going be spectacular and you won't have to worry about the weather being too cold, too warm or too windy. To be honest we hardly used our balcony when we had the suite. Save your money and enjoy the room.
wantocruisemore Posted September 11, 2013 #8 Share Posted September 11, 2013 Although I am normally all about the balcony, I would stay where you are and enjoy the extra space with the kids. That said, if it were personally me, I would downgrade smaller and find a room with a balcony for the same price. DH refuses to go unless he has his balcony. Island_Chica Posted September 12, 2013 Author #9 Share Posted September 12, 2013 Thank you everyone. We are staying in our original cabin, 9200. Going to enjoy our savings elsewhere, like port stops. We are cruising over my birthday so I definitely need to pick up a new item or two from Caribelle Batik on St. Kitts!
k2excursion Posted September 12, 2013 #10 Share Posted September 12, 2013 Thank you everyone. We are staying in our original cabin, 9200. Going to enjoy our savings elsewhere, like port stops. We are cruising over my birthday so I definitely need to pick up a new item or two from Caribelle Batik on St. Kitts! Excellent choice! I was just about to say that I wouldn't upgrade to an ocean suite, even if the upgrade was free. Those scenic OV rooms are so unique & interesting. A suite or balcony is something you can get on any ship anywhere anytime. The room you have is only on a few ships & are very difficult to get, especially with it being one of the big ones. Island_Chica Posted September 12, 2013 Author #11 Share Posted September 12, 2013 Yes, I'm very excited. I think the boys will love sitting on the ledges and watching everything. Plus, that ledge is a great place to drive little trains and cars... Balconies worry me with a 2 and 4 year old anyway. We supervise carefully, but this is just one more variable removed from my worry equation! I'm already putting our "savings" to use elsewhere - just booked a suite at La Concha for our pre-cruise stay. Is it February yet?

My stay in 9201 isn't until August! haha are you planning on doing a review?? I would love to see pictures of the room after your cruise
Island_Chica Posted September 12, 2013 Author #13 Share Posted September 12, 2013 SoCalCruiser - Hi there. Yes, I usually post a brief review. With two small children and a F/T job, a full-blown trip report is more than my schedule allows these days. However, I will typically put up some room pictures. Look for it later in February or early March!

Tetromibi Posted September 13, 2013 #17 Share Posted September 13, 2013 We did a scenic ocean view on our last cruise. I absolutely loved it, and I want to try the Grand version sometime next year. The only complaint we had was how paper-thin the walls seemed to be. The kids in the next room were extremely loud...starting before sunrise each day. Can't remember having that same problem in the suites.
bm6pm5 Posted September 13, 2013 #18 Share Posted September 13, 2013 We are in 9200 on the Glory October 13. So looking forward to it. The few pics that I have seen look like a great place. Will try and post pics when we return too.
