Stopping at ATM's???

I'm going on a Med cruise with 5 Italian ports (among others). We're doing private tours. How do I pay for these? I'm assuming cash at the end of the tour, but I don't want to carry enough cash with me to pay for 5 different tours. Do the tour guides stop at an ATM near the end of the tour? I'm just adding up the cost of all my private tours and it's too much money for me to carry with me.

What does everyone else do?? Thanks!

Hopefully you're arriving at your embarkation port at least one day prior to boarding. You can obtain euros on arrival day and again on embarkation day.

You private tour guide will know where the ATMs are located and should be more than happy to make a quick stop. If you're visiting any towns on our tours, you'll come across many ATMs.

Enjoy your cruise...

We paid the driver/guide in Euros at the end of the tour/transportation. We got a few Euros at the airport. At the hotel, we for the nearest ATM when we were headed out. Turned out the ATM was at the corner on the same block as our hotel. We got what we thought we would need for each day and actually found that some days, the one stop at the ATM was enough for two days. It was really much more simple than we thought it would be.

And you should notify your bank that you will be making withdrawals from these different countries prior to leaving.

Also, just as a word of precaution, I always use a money belt as I'm told and I've read that pick pockets are everywhere so be mindful of your bag/purse/wallet when carrying cash.

You could get what you need for your tours before you leave. Wear a money pouch for your trip, but LOCK it in your carryon when you go through TSA!!!! Keep it locked on the flight, also. When you get to your hotel, put it in the safe. Wear it to port, put it in the safe when you get to your cabin. Then, only take out what you need for each tour.

You won't be carrying around all that cash all the time...

This is what we do.

We first figure out how much we will need daily including tip for the other tour and any other cash we need.

We then verify with the bank how much money (in euros) we can withdraw each day to determine if we will have enough.

If we do we can then have the driver take us to an ATM. Just let them know you will need to use an ATM so you can pay them in cash.

If we do not have enough then we purchase some ahead of time. Most recently we went to our own bank where we learned we could get foreign money and after doing the research I determined that the exchange rate was quite good. Not as good as the ATM but better than say using a currency exchange store either in the USA or in say Italy. I got enough Euros to make up the difference.

We will keep the money in our carry on as we always do and then upon arrival lock it in the safe.

The suggestion to wear a money belt is a good one. You should. Remember if someone could steal your money they could steal your ATM card so I would wear a money belt and not worry about when I get the cash.

I prepay via credit card any entrance fees I can. I take some ship tours as I have found some of them to be better and cheaper at times than private tours

And I bring the euro from home for those private tours that require cash. I also pay for any pre or post cruise hotel by credit card and all restaurants. Your cash is safe locked in the cabin vault so you only need money for that day. I rarely use ATMs and do not want to be concerned with finding several ATMs at each port due to daily withdrawal limits.
