bukibabe Posted September 17, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 17, 2013 Is it appropriate to reduce the amount for tips on your shipboard account to give the difference to your own cabin steward and dining staff?
LHT28 Posted September 17, 2013 #2 Share Posted September 17, 2013 Some cruise lines pool the tips so it would not matter they would have to turn the tips you give them into the pool anyway We leave the auto tips on then tip a bit extra (which they get to keep) YMMV
Keith1010 Posted September 17, 2013 #3 Share Posted September 17, 2013 I would keep the tips in place and give them each more. Often some tips are pooled. Keith
Ambiguous Puzuma Posted September 17, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 17, 2013 The last time I went on a cruise (10 years ago), gratuities were not pre-paid, so everyone was tipped in cash at the end of the cruise. This time, based on the advice and experience of many CCers, I will be leaving the pre-paid gratuities on, and tipping extra where the service justifies it. I quite like the idea of auto-tipping, because it seems to me that this is a good way of ensuring that the "unsung heroes" of the cruise experience also get some recognition for the work they do behind the scenes. pmoniz Posted September 17, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 17, 2013 I never understand why people would do that?? The pre-paid tips are divided amongst those people and many others who you may not see directly, but indirectly they do plenty for you!! Tip those people extra if you think they've done a great job - room steward, dining staff, etc. But don't take away from the people who you don't see who depend on those tips!! Just my opinion, of course!

sweepmama Posted September 21, 2013 #15 Share Posted September 21, 2013 I was told by my room steward on the Pearl, that they get a straight salary and see no extra monies from the gratuities. $1000.00 per month is what he siad that he gets paid. Mostly 12 hour days, 7 days a week. On disambarken days he works 16 hours. I always tip my room steward an extra $30-40 depending on service

Just my opinion too. Yes, and that's why I asked the OP why they wanted to do what they posted because they possibly did not understand how gratuities work. Also a little curious as to why they posted their question on Saving Money on Your Cruise.
