Green Boy Posted September 18, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 18, 2013 just booked a cruise in January for Key West and Nassau, and I was wondering what the temp was like ? I looked a the average temp for Nassau and it showed around 78 for the high and 67 for the low... hoping this is correct.. 78 in January would be perfect... :) have only cruised in the Fall and Spring before.. Happy0810 Posted September 18, 2013 #2 Share Posted September 18, 2013 We normally take a "get away from winter cruise" in January or February. This past January it was about 80 in both KW and Cozumel. Coz was very windy though, but we were able to wear shorts and lay out in the sun on the sea day. :)
bamboozel Posted September 18, 2013 #3 Share Posted September 18, 2013 We sailed last year in the end of January!! We went to Nassua and the weather was beautiful. High 70's....sunny all day!! :);)
asalligo Posted September 18, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 18, 2013 I only cruise in December, January, February and March and we have really enjoyed the weather in those months in the Carribean. It actually got too warm for us in Cozumel in February, as it reached the upper 80's on our port day. There is always a chance of a cold snap of course in Florida in January, but even then we are not talking about freezing weather, it almost never freezes in the Keys even at night. Green Boy Posted September 18, 2013 Author #5 Share Posted September 18, 2013 Thank you so much... I live in Ga and you can never tell what the weather will be in Jan, and we are taking some friends that have never cruised before and I was hoping the weather would be nice so they can really enjoy the whole cruising experience !!! I was hoping for shorts weather in KW and Nassau.... you have made me happy, happy, happy :)
Hockey Addict Posted September 18, 2013 #6 Share Posted September 18, 2013 The water was too cold for us to get into..... The ship was really cold when we were near Florida. Take some jackets or sweatshirts. On the islands the temps were perfect though!
OCruisers Posted September 18, 2013 #7 Share Posted September 18, 2013 The water temperatures in Key West and Nassau get very chilly in January. Doesn't mean you can't have a good time anyway. LuLu ~~~~

onebzemom Posted September 18, 2013 #10 Share Posted September 18, 2013 We have always cruised the end of January. This year it is was a bit earlier, the second week. We did a B2B. First in the Bahamas. It was nice and warm, not too hot and the water was perfect. The second cruise was the southern Caribbean. Aruba was the hottest, low 90's. Water was also warm. But we are from Oregon and warm to us might be cold to someone who lives in a warmer climate. We didn't need to towel off after getting out of the water. That should say something. Ehpride Posted September 18, 2013 #11 Share Posted September 18, 2013 I like to cruise in January. Granted, I'm from the midwest so I consider 40 a heat wave that time of year. The last sea day is typically a little cooler, but I'm usually a little tired of the sun by that point and okay with heading inside for awhile. lauraezzell Posted September 18, 2013 #13 Share Posted September 18, 2013 Like others have stated, the water temperature is cool, but the air temperature was comfortable for us. We were in short sleeves the whole time and enjoyed ourselves.

kingoftheicedragons Posted September 19, 2013 #17 Share Posted September 19, 2013 Like anywhere, and you can tell by the responses you're getting, the weather can be variable in the Bahamas in January, and people's opinion of that weather is also going to be variable. I've been to the Bahamas twice in January. The first time we were there, the air temperature might have gotten to 70, so needless to say, the water temp for swimming with the dolphins was also quite chilly. This past year, the air temperature was higher, and we went to a beach, and the water temperature was fine for swimming. Keep in mind, I have also tried spending time in Lake Michigan which is cold. People don't know what cold water is until they take a dip there. Both times, it was chilly on the ship going to the Bahamas.
vacruizer Posted September 19, 2013 #18 Share Posted September 19, 2013 I do love a January cruise to escape the cold and decompress from all the holiday madness. :D Weather is really variable for the Bahamas. Further south is pretty warm but the Bahamas and South Florida while typically warm, can have cold snaps that time of year. I've been in Miami to 40 degree temps overnight before a January cruise. You won't need heavy winter gear, but bring jeans or long pants and a sweatshirt just in case you hit one of those cold snaps.
Green Boy Posted September 19, 2013 Author #19 Share Posted September 19, 2013 Thanks everyone, I figured the water would be to cold to swim, but I was hoping that it would be warm enough to wear shorts and enjoy the sunshine.. so now i'm really looking forward to this cruise... but I will pack a few longsleeve shirts and a couple pair of jeans.... going to see the world Posted September 19, 2013 #20 Share Posted September 19, 2013 We've been in December and January...On the December trip we stopped in Orlando and swimming wasn't even a thought, haha-I wore pants and a tshirt and I was fine though. In January when we were in the the Bahamas we didn't really go swimming, but we rented some jetskis and we were fine. :)
golfadj Posted September 19, 2013 #21 Share Posted September 19, 2013 We always cruise in winter to get warm weather for awhile but can be cool in bahamas so we go further south.
cruise_control Posted September 19, 2013 #22 Share Posted September 19, 2013 As previously stated, the Bahamas can be unpredictable in January. Usually the temps are mild, but windy conditions can make it a bit chilly.

skipnpeanut Posted September 19, 2013 #24 Share Posted September 19, 2013 Been to nassau twice. Both times, in january, it was cold and so windy we could barely walk back to the ship. Key west was nice.
askimdog Posted September 20, 2013 #25 Share Posted September 20, 2013 We only cruise Dec or January, a chance to get away from snow and below 0 temps. Could not imagine wanting to cruise June-Sept when one can play outside and avoid snow. All our cruises the weather has been fine for swimming or relaxing. Last cruise I didn't even bring any long pants on board. Then again, for some of us 70 is hot and 80 unbearable....all depends on what climate your used to. For me, if the weather could stay 60-75, I'd be a happy man
