Misty_Que Posted September 19, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 19, 2013 What side of the ship has the best views when departing New York? We like to sit on our balcony when leaving the port so wondering if we should book our stateroom on the port or starboard side. Thank you:)
Clarea Posted September 19, 2013 #2 Share Posted September 19, 2013 What side of the ship has the best views when departing New York? Port or Starboard? Thank you:) There will be more land on the starboard side, but once you go under the Verrazano bridge, there's not a whole lot to see. The New York City skyline and the Statue of Liberty will be aft. Beautiful view out of Windjammer before you depart.
Retiredprofessor Posted September 19, 2013 #3 Share Posted September 19, 2013 Have been on Explorer a number of times and while the view is beautiful leaving NY on either side, the port side will give you the Statue of Liberty and New York skyline from your balcony. When you go under the Verizanno (sp) Bridge, however, the best place to be is on the upper deck. Since we have sailed her more than once, we stay on our balcony but you don't get the real feeling of the bridge from there.
cruzinlady1947 Posted September 19, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 19, 2013 Also too, the NY harbor web cam shows the starboard side of the ship, if you have someone looking for you. They sometimes do some closeup shots of the ship as it is sailing out. On our December cruise we went out to the helipad to sail away too. I got the web cam on my cell and tried to see if they showed a close up of us. But, lost the connection just as they panned in on us. Besides, anywhere is good as long as you are on a ship. :p;) Gwen :)

Misty_Que Posted September 19, 2013 Author #7 Share Posted September 19, 2013 Thank you everyone for the great information. We are currently booked in aft JS 7692. I am wait listed for deck 10 aft but no luck so far. I was just concerned if I should change the room to port or starboard seeing the views from 7692 have all the super structure. But I forgot about the bridge (duh:o) so maybe we will keep 7692 and head for the top deck during sail away.

edjny Posted September 20, 2013 #10 Share Posted September 20, 2013 There was lots to see on both sides of the ship leaving NYC. Just spend the time up on Deck 12 (running track deck above pool) and go from one side to the other so you don't miss anything.
