libtrek Posted September 20, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 20, 2013 Going to be driving 25' RV down for a cruise in January on Dream. Can anyone suggest a place to camp for a few days before cruise? Anyone know of a place to store RV for the week of the cruise? So far best deal we've seen is park & cruise rv rate. We're also considering the Radisson for a night and use their parking but haven't got an answer if there's a different rate for an RV. Thanks in advance. Jetty park has a website, so hopefully you can get all the info there. Hope this helps!

FlaGrl4Evr Posted September 20, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 20, 2013 If you don't mind Orlando, we have camped at Tropical Palms many times. They have all types of campsites and rates. I don't know if you are pulling a vehicle behind. If not then transportation from Orlando may not be practical. Here is the site anyways, if you want to take a look. http://www.tropicalpalmsresortfl.com/rv-camping/ BTW: the campground is within sidewalk walking distance of the Old Town complex which has many restaurants, shops and things to do. http://myoldtownusa.com/ Good luck to you. :) . libtrek Posted September 21, 2013 Author #5 Share Posted September 21, 2013 Thanks for the help. I've placed a call to Jetty, no answer yet. Orlando might not be practical since we are not towing a car. Looks like Park & Ride might be a good solution for week away and we could use their shuttles to get back and forth from the ship. Now to figure out how to un-winterize when we get to Florida from MI and then winterize before we head back. Too bad Michigan weather is SOOO different from Florida in January. Sigh. ourfamilylovescruising Posted September 21, 2013 #6 Share Posted September 21, 2013 we stay at Jetty park at least once a year and our kids love it. the park itself doesn't offer a lot but the location is great we love watching the ships go in and out. sitting on the beach and watching the sun rise for us this is fun because we live on the west coast. I think the only way to leave your rv there is to pay for every night so I would suggest staying one night at a hotel the last time we were there we talk to some people and that is what they did then when they got of the ship they were planning on coming back to Jetty. Thank you for your service. My daughter and future son-in-law are both 8 yr CG reservists and plan on staying in due to their love of it. Dh is stationed in LA and future son-in-law in San Diego. He is a CG diver and she is on the MST -Environmental boarding team. BTW: sorry about the other day. Cari .
Capt_BJ Posted September 21, 2013 #8 Share Posted September 21, 2013 33 years actually ... 4 years Academy then 29 years and some months. did time on board Cutters: STEADFAST, RELIANCE, DILIGENCE, DAUNTLESS, VALIANT (twice on that once XO and later CO) and MUNRO (CO) trivia ... one of these ships is not like the others . . . which one and how? I'd accept two possible answers as correct. Get both for bonus points . . .

I knew 2 friends in college that served on that ship when it was stationed in St.Pete back in the early 80's. So I know that the Steadfast is Buoy Tender (or at least used to be) and the rest are not ? What years did you serve on the Steadfast? Capt_BJ Posted September 21, 2013 #10 Share Posted September 21, 2013 BUZZZZZ - wrong STEADFAST is NOT a buoy tender (hint, buoy tenders have black hulls {as do CG tugs}) STEADFAST was my first sea duty, summer of 78 'til summer of '80 from St Pete. At the time we were in friendly competition with DAUNTLESS out of Miami to be the first to interdict 1,000,000 pounds of wacky t'baky. That 'achievement' earned the display of a gold marj' leaf on the ship. STEADFAST now operates out or Oregon.

Just a heads up that you might want to start looking for a couple of back ups. Hopefully you won't need them.
Capt_BJ Posted September 21, 2013 #12 Share Posted September 21, 2013 BH makes a very valid point that did not jump out at me since I am not the rv/camping kinda guy .... PRIME snowbird season! Brevard County operates several camp grounds and RV sites. See http://www.brevardcounty.us/ParksRecreation/Campgrounds/LongPoint/Home Manatee Hammock is large & close to the Port and on the Indian River: http://www.brevardcounty.us/ParksRecreation/Campgrounds/ManateeHammock/Home# Wickham Park is a bit farther south, but a popular inland RV site (Jetty Park is not a county park but is run by the Port Authority . . .) and a quick search of 'Brevard county rvcampgrouns' brought up a number of good leads. libtrek Posted September 23, 2013 Author #14 Share Posted September 23, 2013 Thanks for all the suggestions. In the end, we have chickened out. We're too worried about the weather from Michigan to Florida and back. Also, we do have some security issues about leaving the RV alone for a week in a parking lot. Glad someone pointed out the volume of snow birders. We were planning to wing it on camping sites. Might have been parking in the Walmart lot. The camp ground nearest my home on Turtle Beach during season stays booked and they don't allow any tents until May.
