capt4mark Posted September 20, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 20, 2013 Ok I need help, never done a real cruise before, bareboats and such but never a real ship. Do not need fancy casinos or dinners we are just looking for a good ship to go from Vancouver or Seattle (port is not important) and we dont really need a bunch of side trips 1 or 2 is fine, give us some ideas.. sherryf Posted September 20, 2013 #2 Share Posted September 20, 2013 Visit the Alaska Ports of Call board here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=55 Read a few pages to get an idea of your options. Lots of helpful people on that board!
Essiesmom Posted September 20, 2013 #3 Share Posted September 20, 2013 What are you hoping to accomplish/see on this trip? If you aren't fancy, just looking for transportation, you could do Alaska on the Alaska State Ferry system, staying overnight in a few places. Rare Scrapnana Posted September 20, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 20, 2013 Welcome to Cruise Critic! You do not have to do any excursions you don't want to do. You can get off in port and wander around on your own or pay to be on an excursion (sponsored by the ship or an independent company). I would try a real cruise ship and see how you like it. Holland America and Princess have been doing Alaska cruises for ages. Most people love their Alaskan voyage.
Keith1010 Posted September 20, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 20, 2013 The key is the itinerary. The recommendation to post on the Alaska Ports Of Call Board is the way to start. Keith
Krazy Kruizers Posted September 20, 2013 #6 Share Posted September 20, 2013 Welcome to Cruise Critic. Not sure what you want to do and see in Alaska. Even though HAL and Princess have been in the Alaskan business for years, and you don't want fancy dinners -- I gather that you don't want to dress up. Check out Norwegian Cruise Lines - Freestyle cruising -- no dress up evenings unless you want to.
Glaciers Posted September 20, 2013 #7 Share Posted September 20, 2013 Departure port may be important in that departures from Seattle sail on the west side of Vancouver Island sailing in open waters and can sometimes be a bit rough and certainly less scenic than departures from Vancouver that sail on the east side of the island.
