Can I bring this back on ship from ports

Hi All,

I was asking my sons (37) and (39) what they would like me to bring back for them from our cruise. My younger Son said a coffee cup from St. Thomas. My older son, has a strange request, and I am not sure if I can do this.

He wants me to bring back a rock from each port, and write on the rock where it came from for his garden at his house.

So my question: Can I bring rocks on the ship, As you know your bags go thru the xray returning to the ship,

Thanks for any info.

Helen

I've brought rocks home on trains planes and automobiles. Oh yeah, and from Nova Scotia on a ship.

There are places like National Parks or private property where you don't take rocks from, but otherwise we are always looking for good ones. Don't think there would be any problem at all.

I hope I don't get jumped on for this, after all, rock souvenirs go back to the mists of time.

I think this is a great idea and see no reason why you should not be able to do this. While I haven't exactly brought rocks back, I have picked up some pieces of coral found on the beach (no, not coral from an active reef). Happy rock hunting!

That's a great idea that I made have to us for my Jewel cruise this week! I brought back seashells for a friend during my first cruise and had no problems - they were in my purse the whole time.

One should be able to find decorated rocks at a souvenir stands and stores.

It's a nice idea but consider what would happen if most cruise visitors took a rock, a few shells, a piece of dead coral from each island visited. One rock isn't much, 100,000 or even a 1,000,000 has a visible impact.

I know for sure, but do not remember which Caribbean island, they will not let you take shells back on board. It was either the Bahamas or Cozumel. I have seen them take them away from passengers.

Funny story kind of related to the rocks.

Several years ago the kid decided they wanted to get a hermit crab when we were in Florida. We were driving so it would not be an issue. Living in Canada I checked with customs to see weather it was even allowed and found out that yes you can bring back a hermit crab as long as its not for human consumption but there could not be any sand in his habitat. Apparently you are not allowed to bring back beach sand over the border,

I knew it wouldn't take long for one of these people to get out...

On our last cruise, a fellow cruiser had picked up several rocks in New Brunswick. They were confiscated as she entered the ship. She was told they were considered weapons. If she had thought quicker she could have had them hold them for her to be returned at the end of the cruise, or so she was later told.

Ilovepj while that is a nice thought and one that works well if driving across country, there are often issues when trying to get rocks, sand, shells, dried leaves from other countries back into the US. You may not get caught bringing it onto the ship but then you do have to go through US customs. Last month on a cruise into Baltimore there were dogs that sniffed the luggage and some luggage was pulled for shells...one belonged to a friend, she purchased her shells NOT picked them up, they were taken and she was told she could have been fined. Also, she was told in Nassau, the local government can fine you for attempting to remove their property.
