dlouise Posted September 22, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 22, 2013 This will be our third cruise on the Riviera and we have never had to tender into Monte Carlo. Is there anyone that is familiar with the location where the tender lets us off. We have been to Monte Carlo a few times but we have always been able to dock there, even on the Riviera in June of last year.
willidc Posted September 22, 2013 #2 Share Posted September 22, 2013 We were on Riviera for her April 21-28, 2013 sailing and we were anchored and tendered while in Monaco. I cannot say exactly where the tender drop off point was, but it was a docking area with one ship a bit smaller than Riviera actually docked there when we met our buses for tours. They had a small gift shop area and public restrooms. We have been tendered about 8 times in the Mediterranean and the tendering in Monaco was the 'roughest' we have experienced---and don't know why. I do remember that it was quite close to the finish line for the Grand Prix as we passed that point very shortly after leaving and coming into the tender area---if that helps. Kissing Seahorses Posted September 23, 2013 #3 Share Posted September 23, 2013 The tender dock is behind where the cruise ships dock in Monte Carlo which is around the corner from the Yacht Club de Monaco. In essence, except for the tender, the starting point on shore is identical.
dlouise Posted September 23, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted September 23, 2013 Thank you for the information. Last year we had great difficulties in getting a cab from the port. I was hoping that we would tender into a more central location where cabs are more available. We tried to go out for dinner last summer, but after about 45 minutes we gave up and walked back to the ship.
wripro Posted September 23, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 23, 2013 In order to get to a more central location the tender would have to be able to convert from a boat to a car and drive you there.
dlouise Posted September 23, 2013 Author #6 Share Posted September 23, 2013 You are so right. It's really surprising that there is such a lack of cabs in such a large tourist driven area. We had been told there was a shortage of cabs, but we were surprised how few there really are.
warburg Posted September 23, 2013 #7 Share Posted September 23, 2013 When my DH and I called at Monte Carlo on Marina, we were also shocked by the absence of cabs. We never even saw one. We visited the tourist kiosk, no luck. Since we assumed such a famous destination would be tourist friendly, we never researched the topic. It remains a mystery how people who stay there get around. We got around on foot. We were disappointed.

We did an hours drive and an hour in town and a return drive to the ship. You can also take a ships tour!

They can, as the quaint American saying goes,"easily buy and sell us", but even they say that if you aren't prepared to service your own automobile in Monaco (particularly the brakes, which are a monthly thing there), or have a million dollars in the bank, then you had better enjoy a nice hike! Kissing Seahorses Posted September 23, 2013 #10 Share Posted September 23, 2013 Seems like a great opportunity for the next "Uber" city.
dlouise Posted September 23, 2013 Author #11 Share Posted September 23, 2013 We will plan on a car and driver. A nice ride to Nice to the market, and then a lovely lunch in Monoco will fill the day for us. Looks like dinner on board and a walk around the port after. traveler916 Posted September 24, 2013 #12 Share Posted September 24, 2013 Seems like a great opportunity for the next "Uber" city. LOL!! it will be interesting if they can "pull it off" with almost all of the taxi authorities against them
Caroldoll Posted September 24, 2013 #13 Share Posted September 24, 2013 We went through some kind of a garage and climbed, and climbed and climbed. It is impossible. Arrange something...there are no cabs!
ChatKat in Ca. Posted September 24, 2013 #14 Share Posted September 24, 2013 When we were there and stayed at the Hotel Hermitage, you could see the dock from the hotel. The cost of a driver to port for a very short ride was about 100 Euro. A cab was not much different than the driver the hotel called in way of cost. Caroldoll Posted September 24, 2013 #15 Share Posted September 24, 2013 There is a big problem getting a cab from the ship to town. Personally I think we will skip town the next time. The walk is a killer.
wripro Posted September 24, 2013 #16 Share Posted September 24, 2013 The walk back down from town to the port is much easier as it's downhill so I'd hire a car to get up there and walk back.
kiawahdon Posted September 24, 2013 #17 Share Posted September 24, 2013 We were there last month for 2 days and used the HOHO bus as our taxi- works great! One of the stops is about 30 yds from the tender, another at the Casino and ones at the Palace and the aquarium. Taxis are not only scarce, but also very dear. It was 15 E from the train station to the tender-a 5 minute ride.
Caroldoll Posted September 25, 2013 #18 Share Posted September 25, 2013 They are so uncooperative and we called a cab which never came. You are absolutely brilliant to have found that. We will look the next time. Thanks.

Hambagahle Posted September 27, 2013 #20 Share Posted September 27, 2013 By European prices, 15euros for a ten minute ride, port to train station, is not much. But there is also. "Navibus" or boat taxi that plys between the port where the tenders dock (and the smaller ships dock too) and the end of the harbour from where it is a short walk to the lift that takes you to the station... We got off a couple of Regent cruises in Monaco. Had no problem getting a taxi right at the port... And went to Hertz to collect our rental car. Took about 5 mins... dlouise Posted September 27, 2013 Author #21 Share Posted September 27, 2013 When we were there last summer there was not a taxi in sight. Does anyone know how late the HOHO bus runs? That sounds like the answer.

Chuckler Posted September 30, 2013 #24 Share Posted September 30, 2013 I was not aware that Riviera would tender in Monaco. We docked there in September and it was so easy. We found out what was on , got an all day bus pass for 5 euros each for unlimited travel and visited the exotic gardens and got everywhere by bus. No problems!
