Misty_Que Posted September 23, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 23, 2013 We are planning on arriving in New York a day before our cruise. We are looking to stay at a hotel close to the Cape Liberty port but still near an area within walking distance that has restaurants, a store to get water, snacks and such. Are there any decent hotels in an area like this? We are also planning on staying for 4-5 days post cruise to tour New York. We want to visit Ground Zero, Times Square, Central Park, Statue of Liberty and Rockefeller Center. Can anyone recommend the best area to stay and maybe some hotel options? Thank you for any and all help you can provide. :)

We want to visit Ground Zero, Times Square, Central Park, Statue of Liberty and Rockefeller Center. Can anyone recommend the best area to stay and maybe some hotel options? Thank you for any and all help you can provide. :) First of all, there's essentially nothing in Bayonne, so you're going to be going a little further afield. From your description, I think you'll be happiest pre-cruise in the Jersey City waterfront area, where you'll find several decent hotels along with a mall, and a Target within walking distance. There's a Westin, a Doubletree, a Courtyard, and several other hotels there, and the light rail will take you to Bayonne for a cheap cab ride into the port. Post-cruise, you'll want to stay in NYC. (Be forewarned: although NYC isn't far away, transfers will be expensive!) You have three midtown destinations and two downtown; you'll see a good bit of the SoL at sailaway anyway, so it may not be worth the hassle of a trip (especially with Ellis Island still closed after Sandy), but regardless, you probably want a midtown hotel. There are so many of those that you may want to reply with some dates and some parameters; be warned, of course, that hotels in Manhattan don't come cheap! If the cost of a midtown hotel has you running for the hills, there are a bunch of hotels in Long Island City (just across the East River) that are a few subway stops from midtown and much better value. Many folks on this board have stayed there; I haven't yet but will be there two months from today...
138east Posted September 23, 2013 #3 Share Posted September 23, 2013 Could you give us more details? Are you flying into Newark Airport? Are you two people? What is your hotel budget? What are the exact dates you are looking for a hotel in NJ and a hotel in NY?
Misty_Que Posted September 24, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted September 24, 2013 Could you give us more details? Are you flying into Newark Airport? Are you two people? What is your hotel budget? What are the exact dates you are looking for a hotel in NJ and a hotel in NY? Oops, sorry:o Guess that would help huh? It is just DH and myself. I am still waiting to hear back from TA regarding flights but thinking we will be flying into Newark. We will be looking for a pre-cruise hotel on Dec 11. I haven't really set a hotel budget as I still have to research going hotel rates for there. We are just looking for something nice and clean and in a decent area. The cruise gets back to New York on Dec 22 and we would like to spend a few days touring the New York sights. We are thinking until Dec 25 or 26. Again, we don't need fancy. Just a nice clean hotel in an area that will give us good access to the things we want to see and do and will also have restaurants within walking distance. Thanks everyone:)
138east Posted September 24, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 24, 2013 The first thing you have to does to make sure you fly into Newark. For your return you can fly out of either Newark or LaGuardia. Newark has a ton of hotels with free hotel shuttle, but none of them are going to offer a selection of restaurants and stores. To get that you are going to have to look at Jersey City and pay $50+ to get there plus a higher hotel rate. For that kind of money you can buy a lot of water and snacks from hotel vending areas. Post cruise you are in luck because the NY hotel business is dead dead dead Dec 22-26. Hotwire has a many hotels under $150 and even more under $200. If you want a deal, that could be a good way to go to get a highly rated hotel in your area of choice.
trish1c Posted September 24, 2013 #6 Share Posted September 24, 2013 There really aren't any hotels in NJ near the port within walking distance of much. It's an industrial area not a tourist spot. For the night before, if you want to save money, you can stay in Elizabeth near the Jersey Gardens Mall. It's not much to look at but you can grab some dinner, get a good night's sleep & head over to the port. If your intent truly is to make a day of it, I'd suggest you stay in the Newark Hilton atop Penn Station You can take the PATH to NYC or walk into the ironbound or even across the street to Don Pepe's for dinner. When you come back, use Priceline & stay in NYC. There will be a lot of tourists in town for the holiday so prices will be high.
138east Posted September 24, 2013 #7 Share Posted September 24, 2013 I disagree about the hotel prices for Dec 22-26 - they are unusually low. Between Christmas and New Years they will probably be higher because more folks will come into town, but the business travelers will still be gone. Sassy19305 Posted September 25, 2013 #9 Share Posted September 25, 2013 Thanks everyone for your help. Misty Que, DH and I just booked The Ramada New York/Eastside for post cruise. It had a higher rating than many other higher priced hotels. It isn't as centrally located, but since it includes breakfast and internet and the rooms look decent, we went with it. If you or DH are veterans you can also show them your military card when you check in for a 5% discount. We are also looking at getting a combo Hop On/Hop Off and New York City Pass to (3 days) see all the sites we are interested in. DH is especially excited as one of the things we can get entrance to is a tour of Yankee Stadium. Email me and I can send you the websites for those things if you are interested.
