Luggage Allowance

Muscovites

Recommended Posts

hi there - wonder if anyone can help. We have just received our e-tickets for P&O Cruise on 1st November, out of Southampton and back from Barbados. P&O luggage allowance is 20kg, but flight allowance is 23kg. Which one do we go with - anyone know? Many thanks for your help.

Isobel.

We are also on this cruise and received our tickets today.

This is our first time with P&O and have not yet been allocated our cabin so the luggage tickets do not have a cabin number or deck but have the letter "G" - does anyone know what that indicates please?

Anyone with previous experience - When do you think that we will be allocated a cabin number?

Think that we will take 23kg after reading that part of the documentation.

Thanks

The difference is the weight in one suitcase allowed at Southampton. Never known them to stick to it precisely. However on your flight home the 23kg is the total hold luggage per person. You could take more than 1 case as long as the total adds to 23 kg. You will find as you are sailing out and flying back that the weight of your return luggage will not be an issue (within reason) as long as you are flying on one of the PO charter flights, Thomson or Thomas Cook.

23kg is the hold luggage weight and as others have advised it is not critical to be exact. Your hold luggage is collected from outside your cabin on the night before your disembarkation day. You will see the hold luggage next time only at the UK airport baggage belt. Remember you have 5 kgs, 1 piece for hand luggage each.

Like others we booked Getaway and received the notification of E-Tickets and Luggage labels yesterday. Not allocated a cabin yet so we will keep our fingers crossed for a nice spot.

Bring on the sun, sea and beautiful Caribbean.

To answer the question on cabin allocation- we have booked Getaways in 2011 and 2012. For the 2011 we had the cabin confirmed 2 weeks before sailing and 2012 5 weeks before. Talking with others they sometimes do not allocate until the embarkation day. There is no fixed pattern you just need to be patient and plan the rest of your holiday. Hopefully we will all be pleased with our allocations when they advise us.

I will post when I get our allocation.

Yes we are on Getaway too.So luggage labels showing G, I pressume means getaway. Our First cruise holiday last year on Azura in May we booked five weeks before sailing and even though it was a getaway we were give a cabin allocation straightaway, and it was a decent position on ship too.The second cruise being the TA on Ventura in November we booked nine weeks before and got our cabin allocation straightaway so this year it seems the system has changed and we all have to be patient. And as our November holiday last year approached less than two weeks before we went on Ventura she received a large crack in her top section due to large waves so we thought at that stage we wouldnt be going on her thinking she would be drydocked as a safety precaution.Luckily they patched it in a fashion and we were able to go on holiday and what a great caribbean adventure it was too.So this year so far we keep our fingers crossed and will accept whatever we get hopefully we all will be happy.:D :D

Having said that when we got to our cabin both our suitcases had overweight stickers on them put on by the VENTURA CREW saying they were well over the limit which wasnt the CASE lol case as we had weighed them both several times before leaving home and they were both under 23kg (we flew British airways last year another story there). So at the end of our holiday flying back from Barbados (OUR FIRST TIME IN OUR LIFE ON A AEROPLANE BOTH BEING OVER 50) we worried about the weight of the cases, and had to on the last day go to the warehouse on the dock to reclaim our cases and have them weighed by BA staff my better half was so worried they would be over weight but panic over they were both fine....

The limit of 23kg on the plane ticket is that set by the airline; up to a few years ago it was usually 25kg. 20 kg per case is a limit set by P&O; up to a couple of years ago it was much higher (30kg?) Baggage handlers must have got weaker, P&Os especially so. As long as your case does not weigh more than 23kg you will not have any problems getting it on the plane or (in my experience) onto the ship.

All I will say is don't worry, the cases go direct from the ship to the plane therefore you don't have the awful queue with a case waiting it to be weighed. You still need to queue but only with hand baggage, tickets and passport!!!!!

Hi all, we are also on the Azura cruise departing Southampton on 1st Nov. Baggage allowance is putting me in a bit of a flap, for sure. Is it true that your baggage is collected the night before departure and you don't see it again until landing in UK? I have two questions. 1: I was going to purchase extra baggage allowance for the return flight - will this be necessary if my baggage is weighed in with many other cases?; and 2: what happens to toiletries, etc when passing through customs in hand luggage? If anyone has answers I would be extremely grateful.

Thanks

The maximum amount of liquid you can carry in your hand luggage is 100ml in each little container.

Therefore you will have to have small containers available for your return flight as you are quite right, your hold baggage will be put outside your cabin the night before you disembark. You will not see it again until you arrive in the UK.

Look on the web site of your airline where it will explain exactly what you can take in your hand luggage.

I am not quite sure that I understand your question about the extra bag for the flight home.

Hi Jay23

Once when I flew out of UK, there was a huge palaver about extra weight in my bags. The airline insisted I pay extra or leave some stuff behind. Fair enough - I have no problem paying the extra. However, in order to pay we had to take all luggage to a different desk far across the terminal. Can't relive that story in detail, but due to missing personnel it became protracted and we almost missed the flight! Ever since then, I have weighed luggage and paid for extra allowance before leaving home SO, I am anxious that 46kg will be insufficient for a 2 week trip (it's DH toiletires that causes the problem!), I intended to purchase extra allowance direct with the airline prior to travelling. But now I'm thinking after reading this forum, if luggage is not weighed individually, it may be unnecessary.......?

I understand now. The thing is, if everyone from a cruise took an extra bag on the return flight without paying extra, the plane could not take off!!!!!! It would be to Heavvvvy!

I have no idea how they would know if you had paid for your extra bag or not, but if they allow you to upgrade your baggage allowance, then they must be able to tell. If it were me, I would prepay for the extra bag. Maybe you should speak to someone at P & O customer services.

We flew Premium to Dubai to a cruise and therefor had a greater baggage allowance but the return flight was from Istanbul and we went economy, so I prepaid for the extra bag on the return flight, but I think your situation is a bit different.

BTW, have a lovely cruise.

To check exactly what the baggage rules are just go onto to your cruise personaliser where it confirms the number and weights of bags for your flight. We for example fly back on Thomas Cook to Manchester leaving Barbados on the 15th November and our flight details state for each person "Luggage: Maximum weight 23kg. Hand Luggage: 1 piece, max weight 5kg, approx 55cm x 40cm x 20cm"

You're right. I'm going to pay for the extra baggage allowance and not give it another thought. Then I can just relax and co-ordinate all evening attire with the correct shoes and bags (oops, I mean, make sure all my husband's toiletries are packed........!). Thanks.
