Four people in a triple?

Burghrocks

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone has ever tried or had success booking four people (2 adults, 2 kids 9 and 10) into a triple. The reason that I ask is that looking at the deck plans they have really limited the rooms that they sell as quad balconies and the only difference seems to be that there is an upper pull down bed on the quads. Since we don't envision taking advantage of that pull down bed I was wondering if we would be able to book the triple. We would be fine with the two doubles and the sofa bed as that is what we had on our Royal cruise earlier this year. The triples that are available for my cruise are in a more desirable location or else I would not care. Anyone have any experience with this?

Many thanks,

Burgh

I don't know of any cabin that has 2 doubles - there is a queen size bed that sleeps 2 or separates to twin beds each sleeping one. The sofa in a triple converts to another twin bed. So the cabin has 3 berths and I don't think you can (by law) put more than 3 people in a triple.

A quad has the same arrangement except the sofa converts to a full/queen that sleeps 2.

HAL website will not allow the booking. Went on Maasdam this summer. I checked out the website and could not find any verandah's for four (2 adults, 2 children). Checked with my TA who told me that Maasdam does not have any quad verandahs so we had to settle for OV or a Neptune suite. I wanted to book verandah and have 4 in the room, TA said she could not do it. Veendam also has no quad verandahs. I have booked a quad verandah on Zuiderdam but I agree there weren't that many of them to choose from

no, quad room has a bed that pulls down from the ceiling. Has a small stepladder to get up to it. The sofa bed is not a large pull out type of sofa bed (its more like a rolldown), it really only sleeps one

Thanks all for the insights. I very much appreciate the comments. :) I'm pretty sure that it was a twin sofa bed that we doubled up on during our RC cruise but if the HAL is smaller then it might be an issue. Its just too bad that there are a very limited number of rooms to choose from when travelling with 4 on this cruise line.

The Royal Caribbean pull out sofa beds are full size aka double beds. The HAL sofa beds are a narrow twin, about half the width of Royal's sofa beds. Royal has a lot more variety in their cabin arrangements. I too wish that HAL had quads in the verandah category. Our options for our upcoming cruise were inside, outside or suite (at 3X the price of the outside). The good thing about a quad with HAL, is the price.

You will need a quad room.

We have travelled with our 2 children on both the Volendam - outside cabin. The sofa flipped over to a bed for one. Couldn't get a verandah, you had to book a suite if you wanted fit 4 in, which is way too much money :(

We have also been on the Oosterdam and could get a verandah. The sofa folded out to a bed, only suitable for one. We had not much room left when it was folded out and couldn't access the verandah or the fridge. It would have been better if it was a flip over sofa bed.

The cruise line would not be allowed to book four in a cabin designated for three. Regulations prohibit booking more passengers than there is lifeboat space for, which is what would happen if the cruise were sold out and some rooms were at over capacity.

The last passenger ship to sail with more passengers than lifeboat space didn't have that good an outcome.

A lot of people book an inside cabin across the hall from themselves for their children, or they book an adjoining cabin. I agree that there are few quads on HAL but they are not allowed to overbook the rooms.

We are always in the same boat () as we are a family of 4 and prefer the smaller ships. We had booked a VD on Noordam but switched to an inside on Rydam for our upcoming New Year's cruise. We were 4 in an L category on Volendam and both children LOVED the pull down bed but only DD who was just-turned 10 at the time slept up there. We kept our bed as a queen "just in case" she fell she would land on us! It never happened and there is a non-removable bed-gate but 7 year old DS would scrample up there every chance he got! The sofa cushions turned over for a single bed and that is where he slept if he didn't worm his way into our bed.

DS on "his" bed:

DS on his sister's bed:

Excuse the mess....I was just unpacking but you can see the bed arrangement. We will do the same thing in December only we made a deal and DS gets the "top bunk" and DD the sofa bed.

I too wish we could get a balcony but we settled for an inside right by a door to the Promenade (sp) so I can't go out in my robe and slippers, the outside won't be far away. I feel our children are too young yet to split up and get a balcony room so DH and one of the children would end up across the hall. We want to be together so this is how we do it.

I hope you find a solution that works as our kids LOVE CLUB HAL!!!!

Excellent pictures showing what a quad cabin looks like.

Have you sent them to Joanie so that she can add them to her sticky.

Thanks. Yes they are on Joanie's site for the Volendam cabin L2664.

In fact I believe they can not even fill all of the triples and quads to capacity, never mind over capacity.

I just hope that they make an effort to add more quads throughout the ship, especially if they hope to grow their business with families. The idea of a separate room is a good one but the explore 4 offer they have right now is letting the kids sail for free so if I booked a separate room for them it would make the cost of this cruise prohibitive.

1of4 those pics were great, thanks so much for sharing them and helping me understand the setup a bit more! And thanks to all for the comments and suggestions.

Maybe this issue will be addressed on their new build.

The Neptune Suites are designed and designated as quads but we've never seen even half of them on any given cruise with more than two persons. Sure some have four people occupying but a small percentage.

I wish they would have solo cabins with prices to match but I'm not holding my breath on that one. Lots of solos travel as well:).

I agree it would be good if they had some nice rooms built and designed as singles. I suspect they would have no problem booking them.

There are many people who travel solo and like it that way.

I agree too. Designated single cabins are available to book on the teeny-tiny little expedition cruise I am booking on the Great Barrier Reef (46 passengers max capacity). If you are truly a single you can book them (2 cabins on the ship). If you are travelling and prefer to book it to be alone where you would fit with existing bedding then you have to pay double. A good policy I thought to keep the cabin for single travellers or families with 3 children, etc. It would be nice to see single cabins on HAL on other ships besides the Prisendam.

The issue with the Neptune Suites is that the only "other" bed is a double pull out. For this reason we could not book this category (if funds were not an issue). There comes an age where brothers and sisters, or siblings in general, don't want to share a bed. As hard working parents, we don't want to sleep on a pull out bed either and give the twins to the children. It would be so nice to have an option of the bunk that folds down from the ceiling in the Neptune Suites, especially on the smaller ships that have no balcony cabins that sleep 4. I don't think it will ever happen and there are probably good reasons for it.
