js Posted October 4, 2013 #1 Share Posted October 4, 2013 Hi. I may be booking an S4 on the Gem for August on Deck 14. On Deck 15, the deck plans say Garden Villa Private Sundeck and then just Private Sun Deck. Is the Private Sun Deck the outside area for the Haven Guests since the pool/hottubs are on Deck 14? And, I would guess, the Garden Villa Private Sundeck is just for those that booked a Garden Villa 3 bedroom, which is $20K for my week cruise LOL Thank you. Fishbait17 Posted October 4, 2013 #2 Share Posted October 4, 2013 Yes, the "Private Sun Deck" is for all Haven guests, and the "Garden Villa Private Sun Deck" is just for the occupants of each respective Garden Villa. Robin

Robin Thank you VERY much Robin. I very much appreciate the information. I wanted to make sure there was an actual outside area to sit, even though I know the roof is retractable, I would prefer looking out to the ocean instead of a pool. Also, do people come around and get you drinks as they would on the "regular" pool decks? Thank you very much!
js Posted October 4, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted October 4, 2013 Can anyone please tell me if they look on the Gem Deck plans, Deck 14, S4, what is right next to cabin 14506. This would be my first choice, which is available since it has the space next to it with a cabin on the other side. OR Would it be better to get 14508, which is also available? Thank you. js Posted October 4, 2013 Author #6 Share Posted October 4, 2013 That al is part of the GV. Thank you. So, really it is another cabin next to mine, part of the GV. Oh my, they are huge! Do you think it is best to have a part of the GV on one side of me or should I surround myself with S4s? Thank you.

If you see a diagram of the ship, the whole green area is one of the GV. I'd probably go being next to the GV as there is a ton of indoor and outdoor space for those folks vs. your neighbors in the other cabins only have the cabin and a balcony. I'm sure I will be blocked off and not have access and if there would be many more people in the cabin to cause more noise. I'm leaning towards 14506 one side GV and other side S4. Fishbait17 Posted October 4, 2013 #9 Share Posted October 4, 2013 The only thing I feel I must warn you about may have no significance on the Gem (haven't been on her) but is a variable condition on the Jewel and Jade (somewhat sister ships). If you look at (and "stack up") the deck plans for decks 14 and 13 (below the Haven), you will see that there is a "bump out" on deck 13 on the sides right below the Garden Villas and the first one and a half Haven Villas. Now, this part of the deck below sticks out farther than the balconies of the Villas above in that area. On the Jade, this is not a problem, as there is a "baffle" (like a shade sticking out sideways) that extends out on the sides of the ship between decks 13 and 14, providing privacy. But on the Jewel, there is no baffle, and we were cabin 14006 (first one behind the GV) - we had a bright blue deck light (a lamppost on deck 13) within a few feet of our balcony floor, and had conversations with people on the deck below when arriving into port (as in, they were maybe 6 feet from our balcony and could look up and speak to us). That deck wasn't busy, but there were a couple mornings I was sitting out in my bathrobe and people would come along and stand along the rail as we came into port and at some point look up and see me almost in entirety. i did worry about the whole see-thru shower as well with that stick out public deck below, and always showered standing far back from the window and with an eye out on the deck below at all times - yes, I could have drawn the shower shade, but I LOVE to shower with those windows wide open ;). The blue light was bright, was lit all night long, made stargazing pretty much impossible, and cast a weird blue light through our suite all night. Sure, I'm being extremely picky, but these two things bothered me, and I would be careful not to book those first suites again. These things, of course, don't bother everyone - just the other day someone on here stated they barely noticed it. Now, I'm not sure if the Gem has the "baffle", but it might be something someone else can help out with. The baffle blocks the lamppost light and view from the deck below. When we were in the GV on the Jade, I wondered what the baffle was for, and it wasn't until I sailed the Jewel that I appreciated it. This is the exact thing I would want to know and hear about. So, other than someone coming on here that was in that exact cabin, would there be a way for me to find this out? I so appreciate your taking the time to write such a detailed answer to my question. Thank you.
js Posted October 5, 2013 Author #11 Share Posted October 5, 2013 ps. I booked 14506 but other cabins on the port side were also available. Do I need to look at the deck plans for deck 13? Would this help me?
johnsak123 Posted October 5, 2013 #12 Share Posted October 5, 2013 I think gem 14506 and 14508 have an overhang on the balcony Friends were going to stay in 14508 and moved to 14510 because of it If you google the cabin you might see a you tube video showing it

I googled the cabin before I booked it but will loo again. When you say that my balcony has an overhang, what exactly would this mean for me? I understand what Robin meant with the bump out from Deck 13 on another ship but not sure what it would mean for me now being in a cabin with a balcony overhang. Thank you very much. You will have no worries about leaving the shade open in the shower. ;) Click here to see the photo:

Robin I have mad skills. :D I was determined to find one that gave a good visual, because I knew what you were describing, but really wasn't sure whether or not the Gem had that baffle. Once I get my mind set on finding something... ;)

I understand what Robin meant with the bump out from Deck 13 on another ship but not sure what it would mean for me now being in a cabin with a balcony overhang. Thank you very much. I think by "overhang" he was referring to is just another word for the "baffle" Or for the "overhang" of deck 13 below. From 14506 and 14508 (and the matching two on the other side), if you look straight down off your balcony rail, you will either see the baffle or, if no baffle present, the jut-out of deck 13, before it comes back in flush again to deck 14 farther aft. Some people don't like the baffle (or the deck 13 jut-out for that matter) as it blocks their view straight down, so they book one of the farther aft two suites. I found that I hardly ever, if ever, look straight down off the balcony rail, so it didn't matter - but the privacy and light issue was something else altogether. When I click on the link it shows me the full outside of the ship. Is that what Im suppose to see. Im not that old but somewhat technology challenged lol. Is what you are telling me about my cabin a good or bad thing? Do I need to consider moving? Thank you VERY much for taking the time to post and show a pic. I really appreciate it. I didnt see your post before I responded above. So, I should be ok, is that correct? Looking straight down would not be a reason for me to change unless it would be better for me to move where Im sandwiched between two S4s instead of an S4 and GV. I dont want the last S4 since next to Haven bathroom. Would you keep the cabin location I booked? Thanks so much!

Thank you VERY much for taking the time to post and show a pic. I really appreciate it. Yes, the photo is of the outside of the ship. Moving your curser over the photo should turn your arrow into a magnifying glass. Hover it over the area of the Haven, and click once - which will zoom in on that area. There you will be able to see your stateroom more closely, as well as the white "baffle" underneath - which will block people on the deck below from seeing you in the shower when standing directly below. ;) Thank you. I dont want the last S4 since next to Haven bathroom. Would you keep the cabin location I booked? Thanks so much! Any of them would be fine. If you don't mind NOT being able to look straight down the side of the ship to the water, the forward two S4s are great. If you DO want to be able to see straight down, go for one of the two aft S4s. No real difference otherwise. No worries about the Haven bathroom, it is separated from the suites by two walls and a hallway. As for the picture: if you look up toward the top right corner, you see the whole Haven complex (it sits just under and in the foreground/left of the smokestack). That white thing that looks like a roof or awning sticking off the ship between the floors, that's the baffle. From the left (just above the baffle), the first three open "balcony spaces" belong to the GV. The next four belong to the S4s. The last one is for the S5. You can see that the baffle is below the GV and first two S4 balconies. Then deck 13 comes back in flush with deck 14 (and the walkway on deck 13 goes under the deck 14 balconies), leaving the next two S4s and the S5 baffle and obstruction free. Ps - I would estimate the baffle sticks out maybe 8 feet? Robin
