newtocruisingcdn Posted October 4, 2013 #1 Share Posted October 4, 2013 I know in the scheme of things, my problem is small, however .... We are staying in Barcelona for a couple of days pre cruise. After looking to buy an electrical converter, (I am Canadian), I was told that it couldn't be used with a hair straightener. I am concerned about the wattage. Has anyone else had this issue?
bassmaster150 Posted October 4, 2013 #2 Share Posted October 4, 2013 My wife uses this one which has an auto-switching power supply. You just add the appropriate adapter, and you are good to go. http://www.folica.com/tools/flat-irons/ghd-ceramic-hair-straightener-mk4-value-pack?utm_source=GoogleShopping&utm_medium=CSE&utm_campaign=fgl_000747&gclid=CNuB7LiF_rkCFeHm7AodQDQAyw Or, if you stay at the Hilton Barcelona, they have a switch on the wall plug that will switch from 220 to 115. Otherwise, a stepdown converter will not work for a straightener. Too much wattage.
FreestyleNovice Posted October 4, 2013 #3 Share Posted October 4, 2013 Buy a local one, at i.e. El Corte Ingles, which is a large department store in Barcelona on the Pl. Catalunya square. Cheap one goes for 20 Euro. Saves you the hassle and similar investment for a converter.
mooline Posted October 5, 2013 #4 Share Posted October 5, 2013 Thank you so much for posting this question. Am doing the exact same thing (precruise in Barcelona.) I have my converter packed, but would never have thought of the excess wattage issue. So happy your brought this up.
melissa Posted October 5, 2013 #5 Share Posted October 5, 2013 My straightener blew out all the electricity on our floor in the hotel in Barcelona using the converter. I went to that big store and purchased a new one and bought a converter to use it in the U.S. what an experience
daffodiliaz Posted October 6, 2013 #6 Share Posted October 6, 2013 I ruined mine in London too. I think I'll search for one on Amazon before my next European adventure. Surely they can be found online.
newtocruisingcdn Posted October 6, 2013 Author #7 Share Posted October 6, 2013 Thanks for all of your helpful advice. I think I will embrace the natural look while in Barcelona.
mooline Posted October 6, 2013 #8 Share Posted October 6, 2013 Just spent an hour researching Amazon and EBay to find a good, inexpensive dual voltage straightener. Narrowed down to Conair, but could not see a voltage switch on any of the product models. Puzzled, I went to manufacturer's website to learn more. Turns out many Conairs, even inexpensive ones, are dual voltage with automatic switching. Look for 120/240V on the manufacturer's info plate on the appliance. Turns out that the Conair straightener I already have will fit the bill. Yay! Moral of the story: check the info plate on your straightener, it may in fact be dual voltage. daffodiliaz Posted October 7, 2013 #10 Share Posted October 7, 2013 Will you still need an adapter for the plug?
PeanutBudder Posted October 7, 2013 #11 Share Posted October 7, 2013 I was just in Barcelona.....even with the proper converter, your hair straightener will blow. I am Canadian too and my hairdresser is from Europe...she warned me to not bring my high end one.....brought a cheap one and it stopped working....doesn't work at home now either. There is something with straighteners that just don't work well with the adapters.

There is something with straighteners that just don't work well with the adapters. Decent dual voltage ones work just fine as previously told. I had no problem with my Cloud9 iron (I consider those belonging to "high end ones" together with GHD irons that are originally from the same designers and engineers).
