DAWN from Boston to Bermuda - May

Hello all,

Our family is planning to cruise from Boston to Bermuda in May 14 to celebrate our daughters graduation from college. We have always cruise out of FL but figure this is a quick 7 day trip that we can take and not break the bank :)

My concern is the roughness of the sea during that time. I mentioned to a few people and they all kringe saying that they HEARD the boat horrors of the trip down and back.

Can anyone share what they experienced - what are must see's and where the best to stay is on the DAWN. I am looking to rent two inside cabins.

thank you in advance - Lisa:p

You won't like my experience.

We went to Bermuda on the Dawn in May 2008.

A few hours after we left the dock a woman fell overboard....and the ship had to do these jerky maneuvers to search for her. (She wasn't found.)

Then that night we hit a storm which had the ship rocking and rolling for the rest of the trip down. Most people stayed in their cabins....seasick. I don't get seasick (but I do get scared) so I ventured out (DH stayed in bed) and the buffet looked like a ghost town. This was pretty much the situation until we got to Bermuda.

Bermuda was nice.

We hit another storm coming back. This time we had 50 ft waves & 50 mph winds. The rocking and rolling continued until 10 pm the evening before the ship docked.

Needless to say the pool was drained and we weren't allowed out on the deck.

I called this "my cruise to hell and back" and swore I'd never get on a ship again. Although I have sailed 6 times since that trip, I'd never go to Bermuda by ship again.

Thank you for your quick replies. As you have both cruised before - I have a questions:

are we allowed to bringing a case of water on board with us?

how much is the soda package?

Any other helpful hints?

Hello neighbor! I live in the same city as you. :)

We've done Boston to Bermuda in May and have experienced seas like glass. Others have sailed in May and had rough seas. Honestly, it's a total crap-shoot, but the Dawn is more than equipped to handle whatever the sea throws at her.

Yes, you can bring a case of water onboard. You can bring cases of your favorite soda, too, if you like.

Sorry I can't help with the price of the soda package.

Happy sailing!

Sailed this past May Boston to Bermuda...first night was a bit rough, but nothing we all couldn't handle (there were 35 of us - no one was sick).

We put a luggage tag on cases of water and check those with our luggage at the pier. (and tip the porter when we drop it off)

Bermuda in May was wonderful with perfect weather!

Goodness MsTabbyKats - that sounds so not like a good time. Even worse that they never found her. On one of my Disney cruises we hit ROUGH water and many people were seasick but that was out of the "NORM" for what we are used to. Thank you for sharing your experience though I appreciate it.

WaldosPepper -thank you for sharing - so Soda/Water is good :) love it. Our little city rocks for sure :) it is getting bigger and bigger for sure. Did you drive down and park or did you Concord Trailways it (or is this even an option)

All the cruise lines have their own little secrets and "HAVE TO PACK/DO" things - but I have never cruised NCL so I am looking for any and all hints/secrets and ideas :)

Thank you - awesome to know. Your location is from where I grew up (No. Quincy / Braintree area) and another poster is from my current city. Very small world for sure!!

We've always driven down and parked. It is just so easy! Never thought about the Trailways, but since their schedules are so broken up I would think that might be a total hassle. I am not one who relishes schlepping luggage in and out of busses, and then onto the T or a cab. ;)

Agreed that our city is getting bigger. Looking forward to the day when we move back out to the mountains, though! I'd rather hear the howling of the coyotes at night, than the caterwalling of a few of the locals. :D

Some "Must Do" items on our list: Moderno & LeBistro; Dessert Crepes in the buffet; Martini Tastings; evening cocktails at The Great Outdoors.

I just looked at the directions to get there and it appears to be a breeze. So it will be a DRIVE DOWN for sure. What time do most arrive at the port? So I can figure what time we need to leave :)

OH goodness "the locals" ( I am not a local - I am a transplant from MA). I work in DOWNTOWN (across from City Hall) and boy o boy do I hear it all sitting in my office while some of the locals go to the Soda Shoppe...LOL

If you leave around 9am, you'll breeze down behind the rush-hour traffic and arrive around 11. You'll be onboard in no time, enjoying a lovely lunch in the MDR (or Cagney's if you're in a suite).

Locals... yeah. I live just three blocks north of your office. Moved off the mountain so my MIL would move in with us when her health and vision failed - her demand was that she needed to be less than a mile from the fire station and the hospital.

Definitely a very small world! I grew up in S Braintree (and still live in S Braintree a few miles down the road!)

Unless it was added in the last year or so, Dawn has no Great Outdoors as of yet...

Hi Lisa,

I was on the Dawn twice. Our first cruise aboard her was probably in June, and our ocean view cabin was midship on deck 4. I don't recall feeling much motion down there. Last spring, we did the repositioning cruise from Tampa to Boston. Luckily, we were upgraded to DOS suites on deck 12 forward.

The last days coming into Boston were rough , albeit not unbearable. To feel less motion, try to get cabins midship on lower decks.

As others have said, the Dawn is a large ship and rides the waves well. I had no problems with it.

Just to be on the safe-side, I recommend taking Bonomine. It always wors for me.

I see that you have listed May 14, 2014 on the Dawn from Boston to Bermuda - are you sure you have the date correct ??? I am on the Dawn starting May 9, 2014 - for a 7 day cruise to Bermuda and back - arriving back in Boston May 16, 2014. I see a problem somewhere.
