oceanplus Posted October 10, 2013 #1 Share Posted October 10, 2013 Hi! I posted the following message on the Italy port of call but, so far, only one answer. Do you any recent cruisers can give me infos on transportation from the port entrance up to the pier? Hi! Is there any cruisers who stayed recently at this hotel precruise? The booking has been made (for June 2014) but I would appreciate any comment on how to get to the ship (Celebrity Silhouette). I know the hotel offers a shuttle (at 10 euros per person I think) but I have read reviews saying that it is very easy to walk, even with suitcases with wheels, up to the port entrance. Is usually a Celebrity ship far from the port entrance? Is Celebrity offering, like some other cruiselines seem to do, some kind of transportation from the port entrance to the ship? If not, is it easy walking? Is it far? Paying 20 euros or more for a very short and easy walkable distance is an expense that should be avoided if other alternatives are easily doable... Any comment will be appreciated. Thanks!
Rare cruisestitch Posted October 11, 2013 #2 Share Posted October 11, 2013 Which hotel?
Orlandocruiser Posted October 11, 2013 #3 Share Posted October 11, 2013 Once you get to the port entrance in Civitavecchia you are not allowed to enter the port on foot. There is a port shuttle ( not Celebrity's) that will transfer you to the ship. Many cruisers take the train from Rome and then walk the several blocks from the train station to the ship so this shuttle runs regularly.
seastar2 Posted October 11, 2013 #4 Share Posted October 11, 2013 What is the best way to get to pier from Rome??? We will be there for a few days prior to cruise. Would we be better with a ship sponsored bus or arrange something on our own, possibly with some others from our hotel. Variables of time as well as $$ (euros) will play into our decision. As in other ports sometimes a cab is cheaper and quicker. I believe the travel is time is a about an hour... Thanks...:D
Orlandocruiser Posted October 11, 2013 #5 Share Posted October 11, 2013 We have never done the Celebrity transfers but it is my understanding from reading these boards that for two people the cost of the transfer is almost as much, if not more than a car service. The best way to get to the port is to hook up with some people from your roll call and share a cab. We got a package deal for 135euros pp that included pick-up at the airport, 3 nights in a hotel plus transportation to the port. Now the hotel is near the train station - we are familiar with that area so that was fine with us. We got this from Julia at smart cruise tours dot com. Several other people from our roll call are using them so there will be a lot of happy people if all works well or a lot of unhappy people if it doesn't:). CathyCruises Posted October 11, 2013 #6 Share Posted October 11, 2013 Okay, to answer the first question, there is a free shuttle from the port entrance to your ship, just have to get to the port entrance. Best way to get to the port from Rome is to either take the train, 5 euros/pp, but you have to be able to manage your own luggage, up onto the train, and possibly down stairs, through the tunnel, and back up to the street level--no elevator at Civitavecchia. The easiest is to team up with others on your roll call; we shared a van from the port into Rome for 25E/pp and it took us right to our hotel. Rome Cabs and Rome in Limo are highly regarded companies on these boards. Lastly, I can't stress enough how much more enjoyable it was to stay in the historic center (Centro Storico) as opposed to staying near the train station--I've done both, and I will always stay in the center again--you are 5-10 minutes walk from every site, in every direction--it is wonderful!! When we stayed near Termini, we had a 10 minute walk just to get to the bus stop!!
TheWren Posted October 11, 2013 #7 Share Posted October 11, 2013 Do you any recent cruisers can give me infos on transportation from the port entrance up to the pier? [/i] ?? oceanplus Posted October 11, 2013 Author #8 Share Posted October 11, 2013 Thanks everyone for your replies! When I first posted my question on the "Italy port of calls" CC forum, I had mentionned the hotel: it is the San Giorgio in Civitavecchia. When I decided to paste the content of my post on this Celebrity forum, I changed the title without realizing that by doing so, important information were lost. I did want my post to look more linked to the Celebrity forum and did not want my post to be moved back to the port of call forum... I'm really sorry about this but please consider this mistake as a step in my beginner learning process into CC world (I joined CC last month...). it is called "learning by mistake"... I appreciate very much your info on the free port shuttle.

The location is a good one and if we ever need a hotel in Civitavecchia (we usually come in early and stay in Rome) that is really convenient - I see why you wanted to walk to the port!:)
Gonzo70 Posted October 11, 2013 #10 Share Posted October 11, 2013 What is the best way to get to pier from Rome??? By far the best way is to charter a luxurious helicopter and hire a couple of super models to fly with you. While on route eat caviar and drink Pappy Van Winkle 23 year as you interact with the models. Not the cheapest way to get there by any means, but IMHO the best.
