Daily mini newspaper delivered to your room

:confused:I've just read on the Holland America forum that each morning passengers can obtain a daily printed mini newspaper at the front desk and at other sites throughout their ships.

Does Princess do the same?

A few years ago cruise ships would place a mini paper with the daily "Patter" and deliver it each morning to every cabin. Great way to keep up with what's going on in the world. Much more efficient than sitting around waiting for a news broadcast on TV.

It's something very nice for them to do. And, many thanks for your help.

I don't miss it at all. I'm on vacation and don't care what's going on elsewhere.

When I travel for work the hotel generally provides a copy of USA Today. What a waste. I don't like that paper and never read it. I can't imagine a "mini paper" that would suit all the various passengers / nationalities. Imagine trying to supply such a thing in the appropriate language for all passengers. I'm sure the cost would be crazy and, of course, that cost would be passed on to the passengers.

Holland America has a branding arrangement with the New York Times, for their Explorations Cafe, which is their coffee bar and Internet cafe area. This is why there are mini-papers available at different locations around the ship. These mini-papers are not delivered to the cabins on HAL.

Mini-papers were delivered years ago when things like the Internet and 24-hour cable news TV channels were not available on cruise ships. Years ago, cabins didn't even have TVs too.

.On most of the Princess cruises we have taken, they do keep binders in the Library with the type of 'mini newspaper' the OP is referring to. There were various country's papers eg. US, Canada, Britain, Australia and others.

When I was on a HAL ship, they had daily newspapers in the library which were nice to read. The only news I see when I'm on a Princess ship is through CNN which is usually enough news for me.

It would be too expensive for ships to provide mini newspapers. As another poster suggested, how would the ship know what types of news stories to print and in what languages?

On long voyages I like to get the printed news. As noted elsewhere, the HAL 'newspapers' would represent a variety of countries and their news bias (Canadian news for Canadians, etc,). CNN is US biased and well that may be fine and good for some, it doesn't provide me with the news I want (albeit as shallow as a bird bath). It would be interesting, I think, to have an intranet (ship only) service that the pax could go to for news without sucking up internet minutes.

It was nice when they did that ... but have looked in the library and not seen it on recent cruises .... :o

We cruise mainly on Princess, but we really like the daily mini-newspapers provided on HAL. We track down copies of the Canadian, British, and U.S. versions each morning, and enjoy them reading a sampling of the mini-articles in all three. I wish Princess would provide a similar service.

I also read my city's paper online, as well as the WSJ and NYT. I am an avowed news junky, and that doesn't stop when I go on vacation!

I am a self-proclaimed "newsaholic" and will read anything put in front of me be it print, radio, tv, or internet but when I am on a ship I tune out everything. I am always amazed just how well the world survived without me while I wasn't paying attention. :D

Sail Celebrity and you can pick up the daily news at the desk, separate papers for US, Canada, Britain, also in French, German, dutch, spanish...And it's not the same news in each paper, it is 'local' news. EM

Dude. A PAPER newspaper? You must be over 30.

I might be thinking of RCL as that was our first two cruises, but did Princess ever do this?

A long time ago, Princess used to do this for non US pax.

(I guess they presumed there was enough US based news)

There was a British, German, etc. one-page news summary

that was inserted into patters of folks from those countries,

and also available at the pursers desk.

I don't remember seeing this after they offered internet on

Grand Princess.

When we were on a transatlantic cruise on the Crown in 2012 and the TV reception was poor because we were out of their satellite range, we got a little Mini newspaper each evening with the latest headline news on it. I enjoyed reading it!

Thank you! I knew I remembered getting one, just couldn't remember on which cruiseline. And you're right, I got one, but my husband (canadian passport) didn't.

On a HAL Volendam cruise out of Sydney early in 2012, we also received and enjoyed the Australian version of the mini-newspaper in addition to the 3 versions mentioned before.

Princess used to do this a number of years ago but stopped it a long time ago. I'm sure it was a lot of work to produce and distribute. My guess is they want you buy internet time to check what is going on in the world
