YYZ Transfer time

Have a flight next month through YYZ next month that arrives at 6:50 pm from Istanbul, then onto a flight to DTW at 8:35 p.m.

Is the US immigration/customs clearance in Toronto typically bad - or was the 2 1/2 hours cited in this post a one-off?

Toronto can be horribly slow depending on how many planes need to clear customs and Immigration at the same time.

Given that you will first have to clear Canadian customs (I may be wrong on this point), then clear US customs I'd be skeptical that you can do both within the time required.

The question I always ask when looking at a tight timeline, "what are my options if I miss my connection"?

Thanks. After reading that post, I was already wondering if that old circular Sheraton at YYZ was still there. Fortunately it's a Saturday night, so we have a day to get home from Toronto, before work. I doubt there will be a later flight to DTW after 8:35 - but I'll check on that too.

Just checked flight - looks like it's been changed to 8:55 p.m. That extra 20 minutes might just help.

Yes, the Sheraton is still there. There are also a number of very nice hotels close by including a Marriott, Westin, Hilton, etc.

Good luck, the extra 20 minutes will definitely help.

Go to this link and check the process. If there is a terminal change is required, more time, if not, less time. By the time you arrive next month, the Link Train should be back in service making the transfer much quicker than it currently is. Due to construction the train is currently out of service until the end of October, forcing buses to be used. Not nearly as quick. In my opinion if you need to change terminals, the time available is very tight.

A lot will depend on US customs and how busy they are. Canadian customs will depend on the number of flights at that time but in my experience they are quicker than the American side. Not sure why but that seems to be the case.

As far as hotels, the hotel in terminal 3 is the Gateway Sheraton. The Alt is at the end of the Link Train route and convenient.

Thanks - wonderful site for connection procedures there and back.

Hopefully, the fact we're coming in kind of late on a Saturday the whole process won't take long.

That new Alt hotel looks interesting. I'm one of those people that prepares with what can go wrong with flights - will. Back in a previous work life in the '90's I flew into Pearson a couple times a month. Wonder if it will feel like visiting an old home.
