chirogirl Posted October 23, 2013 #1 Share Posted October 23, 2013 Hello. I am possibly looking into a river cruise through France next summer with my husband and 7 year old son. It seems that I can not find a child friendly cruise line that will provide a bed for my son. I was told that we can travel with Amaworld but that he would have to sleep on the floor. I believe for the price of river cruising he at least deserves a cot. He is well behaved and has traveled the world with us. Anyway, if anyone could be of help directing me to a family friendly cruise line, I would most appreciate it.

franski Posted October 24, 2013 #4 Share Posted October 24, 2013 Uniworld has some: http://uniworld.com/family-programs But don't know what would happen with the bed situation.... Tauck also has family programs! I was talking to a Tauck rep at a travel show who said some suites have a pull out couch. Might be worth a phone call to inquire.... Mark_T Posted October 24, 2013 #5 Share Posted October 24, 2013 I imagine the problem is just that there simply isn't the space to put a cot in most cabins ...
Rare RachelG Posted October 25, 2013 #6 Share Posted October 25, 2013 In most regular cabins, there simply is not enough room for a rollaway or cot. The cabins are well designed, but every inch just about is used. Personally, I would really reconsider the choice of a river cruise for a 7 year old. Unless it is specifically designated as a family cruise, they are just not set up or appropriate for kids that young. My kids are grown now, and they were very mature and well-behaved growing up, but this is just not an appropriate vacation for a child that young. There are absolutely no facilities for children or that are even very kid friendly. Dinners are set menus with one seating, and no room service. And most passengers are not going to be thrilled with a 7 year old aboard. We travelled in France a lot when my youngest was 7, but by car and train, staying in hotels. Check out that option. Got2Cruise Posted October 25, 2013 #7 Share Posted October 25, 2013 Definitely look into the family programs and suites. I'm sure a seven year old can sleep on a sofa even if it doesn't pull out.
acruisefan Posted October 28, 2013 #8 Share Posted October 28, 2013 I agree with Rachel G. I do not think river cruising is suitable for families with young children, unless they have a week that is specifically geared for that. We took our son to France at ages 7 and 8 and we had a fantastic time, but some of the trip was geared more towards what a child would like - we stayed in hotels and covered Paris, the Dordogne (pre historic cave art and underground caverns) Provence, and Normandy. Having just come off a river cruise, I think my son would have been bored silly on a river cruise. If you want to cruise, think about the bigger cruise ships (ocean) that do European trips - they will have more family oriented activities. margaretperron Posted October 31, 2013 #9 Share Posted October 31, 2013 Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection has been offering a handful of family friendly river cruise departures for several years. Uniworld is really kids friendly. Highlights are : special menu for kids, well equipped room and facility to play together in their playstation. I have not been to uniworld. But my brother and family went for a trip with uniworld. I have travelled only with blount adventures http://blountsmallshipadventures.com/where-we-go/ .
