How do you fall in an elevator?

If it said she fell down the stairs - make sense

but an elevator?

Sorry this happened to her and I hope she has a speedy recovery but I really AM curious as to how you fell in an elevator? (all I can think of is the door opens and the elevator ISNT there and you don't notice and step in to..nothing)

There has got to be more to this story. I mean, how do you fall in an elevator? And if you do manage to find a way, how on earth do you break both your legs by falling on a flat surface from standing? I fall down all the time and only have ever chipped some bone off by hitting metal and didn't require immediately medical attention. And that was falling down stairs. This just doesn't make sense unless she has some severe balance issues and osteoporosis or some other bone weakening condition. Or did she fall down an elevator shaft somehow?

Definitely makes me wonder what happened.

Ouch. How do you fall in the elevator, did it malfunction?

It was interesting watching the evacuation process along with a large percentage of guests. Just as the lady reached the helicopter she raised her hand and waved to everyone on deck. There were cheers from everyone. Rumors ran amuck and don't know what actually hhappened but one of the elevators was off line for awhile for "maintenance".

I suspect that a friend, either Jack or Jose' may have had something to do with it.

Maybe she broke her hip which technically is the top of her leg.

Most people think that a fall is the cause of most broken hips, but the ortopedist that operated on my mom said that it's actually the other way around most of the time. The hip fractures first and then causes the fall.

she could have brittle bone desease .... have a friend ,,her and both her boys have it.. a simple trip over small branch on ground for them they end up with a cast.. always say to her that she should have her own x ray machine and a mixer for all the cast they go through. I can not remember not ever going to her house and there not being one of them in a cast.

It's possible that she was given the option of waiting till the next morning or being airlifted from the ship and may have decided she wished to be airlifted.

Lots of reasons why this might have happened and it doesn't have to be the fault of Carnival or "Jose and Jack".

When we were on her, a few weeks back, there was one elevator that didn't work the whole sailing. Maybe she was in one that someone spilled something. It's never a surprise to see a wet floor in there. It is baffling how one could injure themselves that severely in such a small space.

There is a disconnect somewhere. The title of the article says she had two broken legs but in the story it only mentions that she has severe injuries to both legs. Could it be an over zealous news station trying to sensationalize the incident? The words CARNIVAL* WOMAN* AIRLIFTED * BROKEN LEGS* is like gold these days in terms of ratings, are they not?;)

I agree with the other posters, falling in an elevator (not an elevator shaft, mind you) under normal circumstances would not result in two broken legs. Did the elevator "fall" a few floors while she was in it? We can speculate all day long but unfortunately we will probably never hear the full story.

Hi guys. We were on this sailing. No one really spoke of what happened. All of the elevators worked the whole time.

She was a older lady. She was looking down at us from the basket and waved. Everyone cheered a few times for her, then the rescuer and as they flew off.

It was very windy at the time and of course there was a huge crowd. Wee Jimmy made an announcement that it was going to happend and let us know the procedure. Afterwards he said she was in good spirits and thanked all of the crew and passengers for their help and cooperation. Even had us cheering for the coast guard.

The only thing we heard was some crew by the photo gallery saying that she collapsed. Everyone was quiet about it.

Calling the USCG for an airlift is not something that is the injured parties choice. The ship's doctor, in consultation with the Captain will decide if the person requires airlift, and this always implies serious injury that would become life threatening if medical attention was delayed. If she broke her upper legs, this can cause blood clots, which would be life threatening.

I have to say that the most likely cause is that the elevator stopped an inch or two above or below the deck level, and this person tripped when entering or exiting the elevator.
