smarks Posted October 27, 2013 #1 Share Posted October 27, 2013 Is there a car rentals in Seward. We will be arriving in Seward on Aug. 29, 2014 on Radiance of the Seas and staying 9 days on land, then leaving back out of Seward on Holland America. We want to have the car the full 9 days. huskyguy Posted October 27, 2013 #2 Share Posted October 27, 2013 I think Hertz is still the only option. Be prepared for a shock at the price.
Suzanne123 Posted October 27, 2013 #3 Share Posted October 27, 2013 Take a look at carrentals.com. http://www.carrentals.com/us/search/seward-ak/2014-08-29-08-00/seward-ak/2014-09-06-20-00 You don't need to enter any credit card info to reserve a car. It looks like Hertz is your only option out of Seward. ~$800 for the week. It could be worse. I priced a one way from Seward to Anchorage for one day in May, 12 hours total, and it came to $264. ai yi yi.
mapleleaves Posted October 27, 2013 #4 Share Posted October 27, 2013 Hertz is the only vendor in Seward. Since you're doing a RT rental you wouldn';t have that expensive drop off fee, but since they're the only vendor in town, the rates might be high. There were some great deals out of Anc when I looked a few weeks ago, like $200 a week from one of the Enterprise offices. But by the time you pay for a transfer to/from Anchorage it will probably eat up any savings you would have rec'd on the car rental. You'd have to price the options. (for transfers, price the train and Park Connection Bus or Seward Buslines)
smarks Posted October 27, 2013 Author #5 Share Posted October 27, 2013 Thanks everybody. All I have found is Hertz also. I was thinking I had read about a couple other places before but can't find them now. We will be spliting the rental 3 ways and I'm thinking we will come out better with a rental. Thanks again everybody.
mapleleaves Posted October 27, 2013 #6 Share Posted October 27, 2013 Thanks everybody. All I have found is Hertz also. Thanks again everybody. It would definitely be cheaper for you to rent in Anchorage and buy transfers to/from Seward. I chose the last week of June '14 as an example ... Hertz in Seward was $650 wk, Enterprise in Anchorage was $225 wk. If you know your approx dates, grab that price now because it will be over $100 a day if you wait until next summer. It doens't cost anything to cancel a reservation.
smarks Posted October 28, 2013 Author #7 Share Posted October 28, 2013 I checked Hertz in Seward for Aug. 29, 2014 till Sept. 07. It was $842 for 9 days. BUT, they charge .30 per mile for anything over 900 miles. It is 483.61 to Fairbanks one way. We have lots more traveling than that to do. So, I will check out the Enterprise in Anchorage. When you say transfers, do you mean by train? Should I check Enterprise at the airport? What is the best way to get to the airport from Seward? We plan on spending 2 days in Seward so we will have to rent a car there so we can explore a bit. I am shocked that it is so hard to find a rental car. Thanks a bunch for the info. I used the Enterprise location at 510 Int'l. Your dates were $306 for a Corolla. The airport is usually much higher so price each location. A transfer can be train, Park Connection Bus, Seward Busline, cruise transfer, private transfer company like Magic Bus. If you find a great deal in Anchorage it might be worthwhile to get a one-way rental from Hertz for the day so that you can enjoy the sights betweem Seward to Anchorage or V/V, then use a transfer for the other direction. You just need to price all the options and see what works best for you for both price and use of your time.
smarks Posted October 28, 2013 Author #9 Share Posted October 28, 2013 Mapleleaves thanks so much for the suggestions. I will go check them out. I reserved a car in Anchorage for 10 days with a drop off in Seward for $1198. But I got it from the airport. I will check the other locations. I called enterprise, Dollar, Avis and none of them have drop off at a different place. Seems like Hertz has that one locked up. We plan on spending the last 2 nights in Seward before we catch the ship out to Vancouver. The train arrives to late for our car rental in Anchorage so I will be needing a different mode of transportation and I thank you for the names. It will make my hunt easier.
