QM2 Sailaway

Since it's an 8-day crossing I think they'll reach Southampton on schedule. The only thing lost by the delay was the sail away for the first sitting passengers. At least it's not a delay for a medical emergency. I was on the 2010 sailing where two passengers had to be taken off in ambulances. (Imagine having something like this happen at what was to be the start of a vacation. :() Then the one hour clock for final passenger manifest had to be restarted.

My DW just called to report that the second and final coach from the airport has dropped off its passengers and they're now letting go the lines. Imagine the great relief they feel!

Earlier, she overheard someone complaining about the delay: "Why are they making 2600 people wait for 40?"

That is a good question.

To which my comment would have been "what would you want the ship to do, if you were one of the 40?" .

I agree with others who have said "fly in the day before".

While I believe it's always safer to fly in the day before, the overheard comment is so typical of the kind of mean-spirited and ignorant remarks one often overhears in terms of the misfortunes of others. Tedious. But then there's always Karma.

In regards to making 2600 wait for 40, it wasn't their fault! The 40 had relied on Cunard to get them there and Cunard had not allowed enough time for any delays. Why should they miss the whole TA for that? It's not as if they could hop on the next day at another port, or get helicoptered out to the ship.

Waiting like this is the type of service I would expect if I'd booked through Cunard. I admit it's a frustration for the 2600, but it could easily be them on another cruise.

However, in terms of waiting, I once had the Rocky Mountaineer wait for my busload of tourists! There had been a mixup from our tour organiser and multiple buses came to our hotel in Vancouver to collect all of us - but none for our group. We had to wait for one of the buses to return and collect us. Meanwhile the whole train was delayed. We were all so grateful that it waited as there was nothing that could have been done to give us that experience if it had not waited.

Now that would be a sight, being lowered to the deck on a rope ladder from a helicopter because my pre trip flight was late arriving and the ship left without me. I bet they could charge extra for that on your shipboard account :D ??

On my first trip to Hawaii on the QM2 our Cunard sponsored excursion return was delayed by the road being washed out by a rainstorm and the ship waited for us for about 2 hours. I can see how the 40 people that were delayed can appreciate the excellent attention to service the ship made in waiting for them to arrive. I contrast that with my one and only Carnival cruise, the ship I was on left without a few passengers because they were late to return to the ship. Not sure if they were on a Carnival sponsored excursion or not but as we left the dock they were running towards the ship. Our cabin steward told us later they had caught the ship at the next port. No such ability on a TA.

Fantasty51, I agree with you, and I wonder why Cunard books flights that are scheduled to land within hours of the ships departure.

I might be wrong on this, but I think the ship sometimes delays departure when local weather conditions are severe enough to delay the arrival of a significant number of passengers, not just those booked flights through Cunard. For example, the QM2 5-night July NY cruise: there was severe local flooding due to heavy rains. Even passengers who lived within driving distance to the pier had travel difficulties. The Commodore announced that departure would be delayed as were waiting for late arriving passengers.

Anyway, I think it is considerate to wait for those who through no fault of their own are late, but I can understand that not everyone feels the same way. On a ship, I like to relax and go with the flow, but others like to schedule their time. Different strokes for different rowers, as they say!:D -S.

...

.

That reminds me of one of my favourite episodes of "I Love Lucy" when Lucy, having missed the sailing, embarked the SS Constitution by helicopter.

About 23 years ago we were on a cruise on P&O's Canberra. A P&O chartered train had engine troubles on its return to Trondheim and the ship had to wait for us. It wasn't too long of a delay, but at dinner there was some grumbling from passengers because of this.

What is that ugly thing leaving now (4.00 pm local time)?

Highly painted bow, NCL(?)... YUK

Thanks...

Ah, just seen the name... Norwegian Breakaway... They can keep it...

The S/S Breakaway is NCL ,built in 2013(NEW) in Germany. It was voted

by Cruise Critic as the Best New Cruise Ship.

"The Artwork on the Hull is a Peter Max design. He was commissioned to paint the Hull. The Artwork is a composite of New york City and Cosmic imagery.

The Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline,a giant sunburst, planets, stars,

and musical notes" That's My New York" and now NORWEGIAN BREAKAWAY

is my New York cruise ship canvas," said Peter Max:)

There is no better reason (perhaps it's the only reason) for booking your flight to the ship, and your shore tours from the ship, through Cunard (instead of from a cheaper alternative) than the fact that the ship will wait for delayed Cunard booked passengers.

Thanks, might all very well be, still I would not take her. She is out of dimension, does not look like a 'real' ship, just another one of these fun ships .... I want the real thing!

As Stephen Payne is a lecturer on this crossing, and since the delayed flight came from the U.K., perhaps he was one of the 40. Well worth the wait, I should say.;)

His talks have been amazing. His signature lecture is Nov 1.

The ship looks amazing for Halloween as well!
