Up-grade no it's a down grade

Oh, i am sorry for you, maybe you can call and see if they will switch you. When is your sailing?

We have a VH gty on upcoming sailing. A few days ago i had the chance to upgrade to an SY for abt $800. I was very tempted, but because it was a gty I have not done it. If we could get an assigned superior or neptune for $800, i would do it, but I was thinking about exactly what just happened to you. I hope it works out for you.

Did you mark your reservation indicating that you did not want to be upgraded?

Aren't SZ usually sold as guarantees? If that's true, you can not say "no upgrade".

So they rarely assign handicapped cabins to people who do not need them?
They often do in the final two weeks before sailing if they have not been booked by someone who needs one.

That happened to us a few years back on the Westerdam.. We booked an SY GTY and got a handicap room. We too were disappointed loosing the double sinks, having a ramp take up half the balcony and have emergency call cords EVERYWHERE!

I tried very very hard to get the room switched so a person who actually needs this accommodation could use it, but they didn't budge.

After a day or two, we adjusted, but we were still not impressed they put two able bodied people into this room.

So I completely understand your frustration, but don't let it ruin your cruise.. enjoy the bigger space, and the really really big door to the cabin!

I believe there are pictures of these rooms in Joanie's cabin thread.

After the final payment date cruiselines will release unsold handicapped cabins. It is industry practice. So no one has to get their knickers in a twist that an able bodied person got the cabin.

The extra space isn't all what is cracked up to be if you don't need the configuration. Lack of a couch seems to be a common complaint for non WC users.

You can call an ask if they can re-assign you a cabin. Best of luck!

That is exactly how I feel being in handicapped space, and don't want to pay $800 more for it. There are alot of SSs still showing, but it is a gamble. OP, i hope you did not pay alot for your upgrade. I would definitely call ta or HAL, no harm in asking to be switched. All they can say is no.

I paid for SZ upgrade for the larger bathroom, whirlpool tub two sinks

an SY has those bathroom too. But not handicap SY you get larger empty space.

Being 6ft can't wait to use the lower scale shower and vanity. So, no I not getting what I paid for.

Once again, if you wanted an SZ you book a specific SZ cabin if and when they are offered, which is not very often. Otherwise you book a specific SS or SY cabin.

What you wanted was an SS or SY for the price of an SZ. You booked an SZ guarantee and you got what you paid for...plain and simple.

OP- am I missing something? You booked a guarantee in a certain category. By doing so, you allowed HAL to assign you a cabin in that category or a higher one. You received just that, right? I'm not sure what your complaint is. Booking a guarantee is a gamble. Next time book a specific cabin - that's what I do. Now you always can contact your TA or HAL (if you booked directly) and ask for a different cabin.

Obviously, he is disappointed with assignment, and most people would be. He wanted the extra space in the conventional way. I appreciate his sharing, as I was considering buying up myself (not an upsell). It is good to keep in mind what CAN happen; i was just thinking about this issue today.

In the perfect world, people would be respectful and helpful, and maybe even kind.

This is a very educational thread.

OP hoped to get more than he paid for and be assigned a higher level cabin than he selected and paid for. He agreed to an upgrade when he made that booking. He took a chance.

I totally understand the disappointment and would not be pleased anymore than he is, however, that is why we always book by specific cabin number and that is what we get.

When you take a chance, your luck might be good and you get a happy surprise. Or your luck might not be so good and this is what can happen.

HAL did nothing wrong IMO though, as I say, I do understand why OP is not pleased.

I completely disagree here. He paid for an SZ cabin or better. An SZ cabin has two sinks, a jetted tub, separate shower and large verandah.

What he got has one sink, no tub and a verandah that has smaller usable space than an SZ.

If HAL wants to fill 5001 or 5002 with a GTY fare, they should do it to a guest who bought a VH or VD GTY. The larger space is certainly an upgrade from one of those categories, but definitely not from an SZ.

I certainly agree. It seems very unfair. Someone who paid for a VH or VD Guarantee would likely be quite happy with getting this cabin, but not when you have paid the SZ rate.

We were upgraded to an SB handicapped cabin once and I agree with you. I really disliked the cabin, it didn't have the features I'd booked when I booked an SS. Yes it had a lot of room, but the couch was as small as a V cabin and there was a terrible open shower with no tub. I regularly hit the "emergency" button when searching for the lights at night.

I'm with you, it didn't feel like an upgrade and DH and I consider that cruise to be one of our least memorable.

I too now place a "do not upgrade" on our reservations. I don't want an upgrade that feels like a downgrade!

Sorry it happened to you ....

<snip> there was a terrible open shower with no tub. <snip>

You made me laugh! One time we were at a family out of town event. DH and I ended up in a HDCP hotel room (long story). When my young adult daughter came knocking on our door, walked in and saw the shower, she ran down the hall yelling to our other family members "there's a horse stall in their bathroom!"

On another note, I'm surprised at how many people say they have ended up in a HDCP cabin. The last two years every cruise I have called about there were no "verandah or suite" HDCP cabins available. (We don't have to have one, but I travel with a lot of oxygen equipment and a scooter, We do well in a regular Neptune suite, but nothing smaller would work for us.) I must say, after now looking closely at the layout, I don't think I would book one. I agree with the poster who said perhaps it might be better to upgrade someone from one of the V cabins than give them to SZ/SY/SS guests. But then, a guarantee is just that ... a guarantee you'll accept what HAL gives you.

We have to book HC cabins as DH requires one.

We have stayed in 5001 on Vista ships and we did have a tub, though not a jetted one.

We also had a couch.

We've also stayed HC suites and had tubs in those cabins as well.

As I recall! only the VA had a large roll-in shower and no tub.

When we book SY 5001, we pay the same rate as able-bodied pax who book standard SY cabins, although we get a single sink and smaller balcony. Maybe HAL needs to change the category for 5001 and 5002?

Also, we get a single sink in suites ... Even the SA on the Signature ships.

As far as the sinks -- they are not lower. And there are two shower options in the SYs and suites that are HC, so no worries about lower showers.

HAL is not going to let HC cabins go vacant and will use them for guarantees or upsells close to sailing date. It makes good sense.

Totally agree with this. If we're comparing apples to apples. Upgrades are dangerous however for example in my case with my upcoming cruise. My TA advised me to mark my reservation " no upgrade ". I have a CA OV cabin that is unique and only 4 of those on the entire Eurodam. 2 are smaller than the other 2 so I was lucky to get one of the bigger ones. CA 20002. The sq footage of that cabin = 267 sq ft. Now if I didn't mark " no upgrade ", I would have been upgraded to a verandah like VH for less space and even cheaper price as those verandahs all went for a huge sale 2 months ago. After all it is considered an upgrade. Really a lousy deal IMO.

What do you have to lose by calling and seeing if you can switch to another cabin? If they say nothing else is available, call again. You never know what might open up.

By all means, call and see if you can be moved.

Nothing to lose by trying.
