Eastern Caribbean Shore excursions

My family (4 adults and 3 children) will be cruising on the Oasis of the seas in January 2014 on the eastern caribbean itinerary. Can anyone recommend which shore excursions to do in Nassau, St Maartens, and St Thomas? Should I pre book with the cruise or should I try my luck when we dock with one of the locals?

Some research on the Ports boards, here:

would be beneficial.

Checking under each of your port stops on the Ports of Call Section would be extremely helpful to you so you can read what other cruisers have done and recommend.

Have fun planning and look forward to your cruise! :)

This is one that there is really not one answer that fits all.

It depends what your interests are.

For some it is just going to the beach or going into town to do shopping and excursions are not needed for them.

I would start by doing research about each port. I would go to the section that CruiserBruce said. Also, cruise critic has a destination page with write-ups from their very own writers about each port so I would also go there too.

You can also visit other on line sites such as Frommers.Com to read about the highlights of each port.

Once you figure that out if you want to get input on private tours you can post questions on the respective ports of call board and also see if any are offered by your cruise line.

I think the kids would like to do the dolphin experience at Atlantis in nassau. In St Maartens and/or St. Thomas we would like to do a boat trip to do some snorkelling and beach visits and maybe a local village? Any suggestions?

Again, this is best researched on the boards that you have been provided with above.

When we visit a port for the first time, we usually book a ship's excursion.

Having visited St. Thomas several times, we would feel comfortable taking a taxi to Magen's Bay Beach where we like to go. However, St. Thomas can be very busy and the last time we were there the taxis were busy and the streets crowded with traffic. So we were glad we had booked an excursion to Magen's Bay Beach.

St Maarten's has many good excursions. It's important to read the guidebooks and check out the forum's for specific information.

Nassau is a place where one can get a van taxi for $5 per person to Atlantis and places like the Sheraton Cable Beach. Some like to take the water taxi, but we found it crowded. Check the busy Bahamas forum for lots of info about Nassau.

The absolute best excursion my wife and I have ever been on was in St Thomas. We booked an all day sailing excursion to St John with Morningstar Charters. Check out the reviews on TripAdvisor. This is a real sailing experience. You sail over to St John to snorkel/sun bathe or whatever. They cook you a great lunch and all refreshments are included in the price. The day we went it was us and one other couple on the boat. Great time!
