Staying on board entire cruise....?

Hi, we are going out of New York on the Splendor Jan. 20 to the Bahamas--Port Canaveral, Nassau, and Freeport. We know it will be chilly and my husband hates chilly water, and most of the excursions involve swimming in some way. I love the water and would swim even if water temps are about 70, but hubby would freeze. We've been to Nassau before and have no desire to get off in Port Canaveral, and I've seen not so great reviews of Freeport. My husband suggested staying on the ship the whole time and enjoying the pool decks to lay out in the sun with less people around, and doing other ship activities, such as the spa.

We are booked in a spa cabin and plan to make good use of the spa, but other than that, we don't know what else there is to do on the ship while it's in port.

Anyone have any good ideas for things to do on board while ship is in port?

Are we crazy not to get off?

Thanks for any ideas!

I don't have any ideas but I'm sure there will be things in the FunTimes...but honestly this sounds GREAT to me :D. We are planning on not getting off of the ship for 2 of our 4 ports so we're half way with you :p The ship is a destination in and of itself and I think we sometimes forget it. Read a lot of great books/magazines, play some games...enjoy the spa, the quiet and relax!

If you genuinely don't want to get off the ship then don't. Stay on board and relax! The ship will be empty as will the eateries and pools and other public areas. If you feel like you aren't missing out on anything in port then go for it!

Nope not crazy. On one cruise I got off for about 20 minutes in Montego Bay and decided it was not as delightful as described. Didn't bother with Cozumel. I did spend a few hours in Grand Cayman and it was nice.

If I had not gotten off at all it would have been fine with me. There's so many things to do aboard and it's much less crowded and quieter while everyone is racing around the ports. The Bahamas really are not that great, I've been twice and really once was enough. Not too much to do in Cape Canaveral. Usually there is a tour offered.

I think your husband has a good idea and you'll certainly have a chance to relax. If you get cabin fever then you can go into port. Be flexible and you'll have a great cruise.

We're doing that itinerary on the Pride in Feb. 2014. We did the same itinerary in 2010. We've been to Nassau a number of times, so no need to visit again, Port Canaveral is okay if you want a quick couple of hours at one of the Disney venues, or you want to see the Space Center, and Freeport doesn't have much to see, that we haven't seen before. We booked the Feb. cruise to relax on the ship, and we can't wait. Believe me, you'll find plenty to do if you don't get off the ship. When we did this on another cruise, the pool was not crowded, and you can have your pick of chairs. If you have a balcony, sit back with a good book. We also met some very interesting people when we've stayed on the ship.

Our weather in Feb. 2010 was okay. We started warming up after about a day and a half, Florida was in a bit of a cool spell and it was about 68-70, Nassau about 80-82, and Freeport was about 90 and humid. All in all we have a great time when we stay on the ship.

Have a great cruise!!

Take the bites of nassau food tour, we just took it when there last week and it was fantastic. We'd been to Nassau so many times we looked to do something different and were glad we did.

When we were there in Sept we took the local bus just past the British Colonial Hilton to the Arawak Fish Fry and had some of the freshest seafood we ever had, and we live in Florida. Either one and you can't go wrong.

I am planning to do this when we sail RC Allure. I am not getting off before the seven days even if the ship sinks. I intend to get my monies worth, dead or alive...ok, more alive!

I stayed on the ship for one of the ports on my last cruise and only got off for about 30 minutes in the 2nd port.

I LOVE the ship when it's in port. So relaxing. That's usually when I try the pools and slides, take my time at the buffet and just enjoy the quietness of the ship.

In Nassau, I'd recommend walking to the Pirate Museum. It's only 4-5 blocks and is the top rated pirate museum in the world. It's a collaboration of several countries, historians, archaeologists, etc. It's an interactive museum, and every educational as well as entertaining. Other than that, staying on the ship while everyone else is running around the ports is a good idea - it'll be much quieter, you'll be able to have your pick of deck chairs on deck, or chairs or sofas on the Promenade deck or lobby; and won't have to stand in line long at any of the Lido eateries.....

I've done this several times. Port days are the best days to enjoy the ship because there are no crowds and no lines. There won't be much to do on the ship though. Some bars will be open, the pools will be open normal hours, and you won't have any trouble getting a lounge chair in a nice spot. You can usually book spa appointments on sea days too and can often catch a sale. Watch the Fun Times and flyers you will get in your cabin.

Enjoy your cruise!

The tough is not crazy at all.

Our first cruise, we had no intention of getting off the ship. But this was back in the days when the ship seemed to shut down once docked.

Yet when we got to our first port of Nassau, we did stroll off. We walked down the street to Burger King and got 2 orange sodas, and then reboarded.

We were at sea for another day and a half, and started developing cabin fever. We were in San Juan, and ended up touring with a couple we met in board WHI we hit it off with. So we had a ball touring the fort and walking around town. I also discovered what sea legs were.

So with good intentions of staying on board, anything can change. Both Nassau and Freeport are quite pretty, but you have to get out there. Even Port Canaveral has NASA right there.

I will tell you that when you go trans ocean without that option, there's very few dry eyes when you see land after 5 days.
