sail7seas Posted October 31, 2013 #2 Share Posted October 31, 2013 Hotel Service Charge is automatically added daily to our shipboard account. You don't need cash for tips unless you wish to give 'over and above' the automatic charge.

cherpo3 Posted November 1, 2013 #4 Share Posted November 1, 2013 Tipping is automatically taken out of your acct. HOWEVER, you can request a letter stating that you don't want tips automatically taken out but that you want to tip whomever you want to tip. RuthC Posted November 1, 2013 #5 Share Posted November 1, 2013 Tipping is automatically taken out of your acct. HOWEVER, you can request a letter stating that you don't want tips automatically taken out but that you want to tip whomever you want to tip. Cher We didn´t know about requesting a letter stating you don´t want tips automatically deducted...how and where do you get that? Cherpo3's post is inadequate, at best. As Lorekauf said, please don't follow that advice, as it will not get the results you are hoping for. Should you remove or reduce the Hotel Service Charge, the stewards will be asked to explain what they have done so wrong that you took that action. Then, if you do give cash instead, they will be required to turn all of it in to the tipping pool, and won't get the benefit of your gratuity (other than a small amount). If you leave the Hotel Service Charge intact, and choose to give additional cash, the recipient may keep those funds.
startwin Posted November 1, 2013 #6 Share Posted November 1, 2013 To the OP - some cruise lines have a different way of dealing with tips. HAL's method is to simply apply the hotel service charge to your onboard account daily. Makes it so simple. Other cruise lines handle it differently and a letter as mentioned may be used. Not on HAL. You may choose to tip extra in cash to those who have given you exceptional service. If you follow Ruth's advice above, you can't go wrong. t60 Posted November 1, 2013 #7 Share Posted November 1, 2013 We don´t take off the automatic tips, and I´m sorry if my post gave you that idea, It´s just that we´d never heard of a ¨letter ¨as previously mentioned. Tipping on HAL seems the same as Princess so everyone gets a share Sandy in Spain

Tipping on HAL seems the same as Princess so everyone gets a share Sandy in Spain I don't know what the "letter" is either. As far as I know it's a form. I've never seen it as I've never removed the HSC. Tipping is the same on Princess as it is on HAL.

Cher Those that remove the auto tip shouldn't be cruising. Stay home if you think the hard working crew don't deserve some adequate compensation. Yes you can remove the auto tips with the front desk.. However if you do remove the auto tips & tip in cash yourself, then those who get the cash tips must turn them back in to the tipping pool.. But if you leave the Auto service charge on, you can tip extra in cash to those who have made your cruise so wonderful, & they are permitted to keep the extra cash!.. Ruth's post hit the nail on the head! Betty
